hi there
im just wondering if limewire is full of viruses because i want to download it

because i was searching somewhere on the net and there where a couple of quotes saying its full of viruses

please can some one give me an answer

thank you
haidar

Limewire is an absolutely a well written high performance program and it can become infected itself as can almost any program.

But it is what you download that gets you infested. You do realize when you search find and download that you are not getting it from some server like download.com but directly from an individual persons HD.

They can be out to get you or not realize they are infected yet!

Yer what he said.

Plus if you are searching for an .MP3 file for example (which are generally 5mb in size)
and one pops up thats 200kb then it's basically a virus

Have A Nice Day :D

I'd like to see those links

Can you provide them?

Limewire doesn't have viruses, it would be removed within the first minute of this being known
They have a huge site here: http://www.limewire.com/download/
With Support as well!

Absolute ludicrous to say this

As for jimjams comment, being just as bad (ignorant is better) as the original question
Viruses can go in any size file from less than a Kilobyte to Gigs (as in packages) including songs!

By the way, I wouldn't download using Limewire, half the downloads have viruses attached to them. Actually in many cases Malware removal specialists will not help members with this download manager installed

This would have to be the question of the day! :haha: :D :p

As said before, Limewire has no viruses. Its what you download that gets you viruses. Chances are, if you use Limewire, you will get a virus on accident. My suggestion is that you stay away from it and instead use Bittorrent to download (legal) files from your peers.

Yeah, some certain torrent sites certify that the files you are downloading work and are virus free.
Some usergroups do the same.
Worth looking into.

Well any of them can download Viruses
But I guess Bittorent (and especially from your peers) you are less likely to get Virus infection
But quite obviously you still can

Limewire downloads just seemed to be the worst

The only way to trust the download is by confirming the MD5 Hash code
Even the trusted recognized businesses that use Bittorent say check our hash codes first. Although you would really need to trust your peers, and know them well

Did you read my post lol?

Plus if you are searching for an .MP3 file for example (which are generally 5mb in size)

I didn't say anything about virus coming from any size
I said that if you are searching for a type of file and lots have the same sort of file size, and then one crops up thats very different in size etc. then it's probably a virus

So yes limewire does include viruses but they are generally easy to spot

!!!!

P2P programs = Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur.

Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. You may continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk; however, please keep in mind that this practice may be the source of many malware infestations. see http://spywarewarrior.com/viewtopic.php?t=26216

ill try and find the parts where it said that there are viruses

thanks

i found these comments on youtube

DUDE LIME WIRE IS loaded WITH VIRUSES!!

Don't use lime wire it gives virus the man that was fixing my pc said so.

thanks

While the program itself is not infested with viruses or any other malware, the files that you download while using the program may have some junk attached to them, and may harm your system. This is the truth for any p2p program.

so bearshare can have the same problem cant it depending on the files uploaded on it .

so what was uploaded gets downloaded

so you mean that if a music file was uploaded with viruses on it when you download it you get the viruses that where uploaded with the song or what ever you download

thanks
haidar

The truth is that all these files are coming from another person's Hard Drive. People with bad intentions have taken advantage of the P2P process. One might hide or attach a malicious program within/to a particular file(MP3, WMV, AVI, WMA........) in an attempt to get access to your computer. Whether it is Bareshare, Limewire, Morpheus or Torrent Clients such Vuze or Bit torrent, it doesn't matter the process is the same(Hard Drive to Hard Drive). The software is not the problem. The problem lies with the person on the other end of the sharing process.

so how can i know if a music file has viruses on it .

is there some how i could know if theres viruses on a song before i even download it.

thanks

haidar

Through the past months, it has become really infested. And its getting worse!!

If your going to use it, the best thing you can do (imo) is look for the file's that are capitalized, with the artist in front of the title.

e.g..Bob Seger-Against the Wind(MP3)

Corrupt file...aginst the wind-bob seger

Today, theres even a few, that look safe, but arent. I suggest you do your searches several at a time. Then run a full system scan, opposed to a few on several different occasions.

The last time I installed, Limewire I didnt get infected. But after I installed the Java, I did.

Live 1 care, has great real time protection for this.

P2P has become the easiest way for malware writers to spread their warez. I could write a malicious file right now (give it any name - same as the legit files - or capatalize as you say most of them do), look at the top downloaded music for the day - give it the name of the top download, put it in my sharing folder and hook up to share it on any P2P program.

There really is no way for a normal user to decide what is legit and what isn't.

You can't go by file size either, because you can use the music file as a trojan to carry the goods - and different music files of different quality will be different sizes anyways.

What it seems like they have been writing lately will be a .dll file inside, which hooks svchost.exe - then people think svchost is the problem - when in fact it is the .dll file using svchost as the generic host to launch. I have also seen a few using ADS lately.

There is also currently a rootkit going around and 3 other type of malware that will alter your DNS

yeh i have a compaq laptop whicj has some sort.dll virus i cant remove what do i do to remove it
thanks

I've gotten a virus twice...that's it, and I've been using LimeWire for years.

You just have to be smart about it, and scan everything that you download :) . Note that LimeWire itself isn't a virus...it's some files that are uploaded that have viruses in them.

During the course of our interactions please be sure to follow all instructions carefully, and ask questions if you are unsure of how to proceed at any point.

Please have a read here-> Is your system infected? Read this before Cleaning or Formatting

If you decide to clean your system please follow these Viruses/Spyware/Malware, preliminary removal instructions and post back in this thread with the requested logs. There should be at least 3.

1)MBAM log
2)SAS log
3)Hijackthis log (last step)

Also sometimes when i download files from limewire, when it has finished downloading limewire pops up saying 'This is a corrupt file would you like to finish downloading?' then my anti-virus pops up saying it's found a virus.

Be wary of that
