A 48-year-old Illinois man has experienced an online scam that was particularly devastating, both financially and emotionally. A woman he believed to be his online girlfriend turned out to be a fake, and his money has disappeared with her.

The scam was recently revealed because he went to the police asking for help to rescue the woman, insisting that she had been kidnapped in London. The online "relationship" between the two began over two years ago, during which he wired about $200,000 to several different bank accounts in Nigeria, Malaysia, England, and the US. That's all according to a police report cited by the Naperville Sun, which explained the nonexistence of the woman:

An identification card the woman provided to the man was a sample driver’s license from Florida, the report said. According to the report, when the officer stated the female did not exist, the man "was in disbelief." The case is under investigation.

We knew that love, offline or online, was blind, but we never thought it could be pushed to this extent. He's not the brightest man alive, but given your experiences with love, do you feel sorry for him?

There's no fricking way i would fork out over $200,000 for a girl over 2 years online or in person. But yeah i feel sorry for the guy, i imagine an exercise in common sense would have prevented this from occurring, but i guess the guy was too lonely

Haha, I'm sorry... I just... BWAHAHAHAHA! *******.

You see kids, THIS is why you need to leave the computer chair and go OUT!

Do I feel sorry for him? Hell no.
Smart enough to amass $200k and stupid enough to blow it on what sounds like a plot from a bad tv episode.

Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public- H.L.Mencken

Similarly enough, my sympathies are also reserved for the non *****ic... for the matter that she was an online girlfriend as well... haha 200,000 bucks? good luck to him. He could've used that money to see if they can treat low IQ.

and yes i'm mean.

aaaaaaaaa hahahahaha!!!! I still dont get it how he made $200k at the first place. inheritence, may be?

Applaud goes to the other guy (or gal).

In other news ....a Chicago bank across town was held up when the robbers sent a stick up note and the gun in the drive-thru tube.

They keep saying that....but there's this big scary glowing orb in the sky! :p :)

ROFL!!!

What a waste of money tho, he could have used that money to get a real life instead.

Wow it's just so mind boggling dumb that I'm really at a lack of words, I mean sure my younger self had some online disappointments but I was never stupid enough to send money!

The Scarlett "L"........(For "loser")

This is the kind of nitwit that would let this happen to him, then go on the 6 o'clock local TV news and bellyache about online scams. As if that isn't bad enough, the reporters would most likely pander to him. Hey, this guys even stupid enough to think that they actually give a crap.

Anyway, no such thing would ever happen in my "hood". The "escorts" cost less than the Viagra. For fifty bucks you can probably make it a threesome.

If he wanted to blow away all his money, I think he could have been better off spending it with 'girls' from a certain 'adult entertainment' magazine house (I am sure all of you remembered that scam which came out couple of years ago) instead on some guy pretending to be a woman. At least he would have gotten his money's worth in someway. ;)

Edit:
Captain has hit on the same point, but I took into account the sum involved and accordingly adjusted the standard of 'escorts'.

If he wanted to blow away all his money

..he probably should go hang out in Caps hood..

Shouldn't you take your own advice? I mean what were you doing when you wrote this? LOL..

The guy has probably been bald, over weight, and a social cripple all his life. The pic's that were sent to him must have made him feel very special,I can see how someone this emotionally and socially stunted got burned.

First sensible comment of the day. It's not stupidity, it's a socially inexperienced introvert letting his despair take hold of him. IQ comes into play, but that is not the main point.

I am writing an essay about the need for social acceptance as I logged on to read this >.<. I'm going to cite this and use it in my essay.

But I would much rather spend that $200k on 40,000 $50 *****s...that or a computer that can play crysis.

Wow. Just...wow. There's just no excuse for that. This man is an *****, plain and simple. I'd feel more sorry for him if it didn't go so perfectly for Mr./Mrs. Scammer.

I do feel sorry for him; obviously he is a very lonely man who let his emotions get the better of him. He spent $200K not on himself but to try and help someone else. Should he have looked before he leapt, of course though I don’t feel I should be any less compassionate for him. Hopefully he has not only learned an important lesson but will be an example to others to check things out and verify things before parting with some hard earned cash.

I can sort of understand. Feeling lonely can be really hard, especially for us guys. It is even worse if you have medical problems like depression.

So do I feel sorry for him, yea. But I am also shaking my head and saying what were you thinking... He can send me $200K and I'll set him up with a sweet server (and his own desktop) to have fun on atleast.

I don't feel sorry for him at all. I would kill anyone who has online girlfriends.
