40GB of missing hard drive space

My roommate's ThinkPad has a hard drive that displays it as having 88GB of total space. It says he has 14GB of free space. However, I ran WinDirStat on it to see what was taking up space, and it only found 27GB worth of data. The same thing happens if I select all the files on his hard drive, 27GB. System restore is turned off, his recycle bin is set to a small size. I can't figure out what is taking up all that space. It's almost as if there is an invisible partition or some program is reserving 40GB of space for something. Any ideas as to what could be taking up this space?

*EDIT*

Sorry, we just figured it out. He unknowingly has been backing up his hard drive using IBM's provided backup software, and for some reason those backups did not appear in any directory.
