OK good!

ComboFix post log, and follow with DrWeb to be sure.

After the last copy/paste op above, what about internet?

Mike

Copy/paste did not fix connectivity.

I can't uninstall SAS due to Windows Installer error. Can I just delete files using search?

I downloaded a new ComboFix and ran it. I saw a tiny ComboFix box with a blue progress bar that moved across it in a few seconds. Then nothing. I tried again with the same result.

Alright good!

Did you set it to Start Automatically and it did not after reboot?

Likely SP3 will fix it!

What SP is on the CD you used to repair?

Mike

The disk says Update Rollup 2. I don't see anything about a Service Pack #.

The DHCP client is set to start automatically. But it seems it did not. We'll see if SP3 fixes it.

That is not the SP level but a special update for media center.

Unless it has a SP1 or SP2 on the Disk you are likely running no SP!

And if that was the case before we even began, it may be why you were so infested,. SP1 covered numerous security issues and SP2 did even more and SP3 even more.

Do all M$ updates after SP3 is installed.

Mike

I was definitely updated through SP3 before this infestation. Early on I checked that I was. The disk I used to repair was the one that came with the machine years ago and had never been opened.

SP3 has been chugging along for almost an hour now. When it finishes I will check for MS updates.

Good good!

When we get finished remind me to help you burn a Slipstreamed Media center SP3 CD so if you need to do a repair later ot get a file then it will be SP3!

Mike

When SP3 finished and restarted it paused for a long time on the Windows logo and then eventually I got a services.exe memory error. I OKed and it went to a completely black screen with a white arrow cursor. I can move the cursor but there is nothing to click on and I can't get any response from anything I try. It started successfully in safe mode, but I only get the services.exe error and the black screen with regular startup.

EDIT: In safe mode internet works without any hassles. So that's something positive.

Yeah! That is positive! But..! Geeze.

Look in Add/Remove programs and see if SP3 is listed as installed yet?

Then try to boot VGA Mode in the Advanced menu.

Mike

SP3 appears in Add/Remove programs. It doesn't list a size or anything but it gives the option to remove it.

Starting in VGA mode gives the same result as normal except bigger. Still the services.exe memory error and then black screen with movable (but useless) cursor.

Geeze if it weren't for bad luck we would have no luck at all.

OK try removing SP3 in Safe Mode via add/remove.

Mike

Trying to remove SP3:

Device installer error
Windows could not load the installer for Keyboard. Contact your hardware vendor for assistance.

Same for MEDIA, Modem, Net (perhaps others also, I clicked OK 20-30 times, many times for each item.)

Service Pack 3
The system cannot find the file specified.

The Service Pack 3 was not uninstalled.

Mike,

Are you still there or should I see if someone else wants a crack at this?

Thanks.
