Additional SATA alongside master IDE drive

Hi

I must be having a senior moment (slightly worrying at 37!) but I am trying to add a new SATA HDD as an additional internal drive in a machine that has an IDE HDD with XP Home on it. The MOBO has a SATA data port.

I've atttached the data and power cables and rebooted. XP sees and installs the new Maxtor drive but it doesn't feature in My Computer.

What am I missing?

It's a Compaq Presario SR1000.

The presario is never going to like that... but check your BIOS settings very carefully to be sure everything is detected and your boot order is what you want.

Out of the blue, maybe you should go in disk management in order to format the drive & give it a letter in order for it to show up in My Computer.

Thanks for that, so I'd better stick to two IDE HDDs do you think?

No. You can mix sata and ide drives fine. There is no reason that can't work.

There's no difference for the operating system whether the drive is SATA or IDE. In both cases it has to be formatted for it to be accessible.
