iwas asked to restart to run chkdsk on vista and it asks to do startup repair but says it can~t fix it says startup repair offline. f8 options don~t work, help please

Whether the fact is that after you reboot the computer, it asked you do startup repair immediately or during the chkdsk process?
In fact, Windows chkdsk may cause damage seriously. I also encountered the similar problem. As Windows cannot boot, you tried repair by the system CD, but cannot do anything. Much more the command line is quite different with XP.
In my opinion, you’d better copy the partition or hard drive sector by sector and try other software to repair or recover data.

You're probably best to either
>> boot from a CD which includes tools to try and repair your hard drive issues OR
>> Is there a recovery partition on your hard drive?

1) Do you have your Vista installation CDs? boot from them and use them to repair Vista or
2) you can also: Go to your mfr support site. Check your make/model and see if they provided a recovery partition on your HD and which function key to hit/how to get into it or
3) You can try downloading and burning a bootable CD on a friend's computer. Then use it to boot up your own computer and attempt to fix the boot partition on your disk

Specificaly, see here for how to build a Gparted Live CD.. You can ignore the stuff about fixing USB but just use it to boot from and the tools to try and repair your HD
