Amazon’s strategy in the connected video doorbell race is to quite simply buy its way to the top.

The e-commerce giant in December purchased smart home video platform Blink for an undisclosed sum, presumably to bolster its Amazon Key in-home delivery service. Now, Bezos and company have scooped up one of the industry’s premiere providers in Ring.

Multiple publications including Reuters and Engadget dropped the news Tuesday afternoon before any official press releases on the matter were published. Reuters claims Amazon paid more than $1 billion for Ring although that hasn’t been confirmed as of writing.

An Amazon spokesperson told Engadget that they were “excited” to work with Ring and aid its “mission to keep homes safe and secure.” A spokesperson for Ring, meanwhile, said they could “achieve even more” by teaming up with Amazon in their “vision for safer neighborhoods.”

Ring was founded in 2012 by Jamie Siminoff as a neighborhood security provider. The company, then known as DoorBot, was featured on Shark Tank in 2013 with Siminoff asking for a $700,000 investment. He walked away without a deal but the exposure – and a rebranding – really helped get the ball rolling.

Last summer, Ring launched its second-generation video doorbell and now with the Amazon deal, it seems Siminoff has really hit a home run.

They certainly have the cash to buy up all the competitors but until they can find an absolute way to prevent hackers from cracking into the system and your home I'm keeping my Bull Mastiff and shotguns .....

Hopefully this would eliminate the need for a separate subscription if you have an amazon prime.

F U to all who think they have the right to capture my face and upload it to the internet for ringing their doorbell. I will simply use a marker on your lense or put a piece of tape over it. Or I'll wear a $2 fake nose. Or I can simply step to one side of your $ camera and all that money you blew on it is wasted. I feel sorry for the delivery guys. UPS and FedEx coming out with masks in 3...2...1... :)
