I'm building a new system and want to emphasize low power consumption, but I want to do some occasional gaming. No overclocking and moderate video settings, and probably not the most demanding games. Would an Athlon X2 4050e be up to the task, or should I stay with Athlon 64 X2? In terms of power consumption and heat generation, would I see an appreciable difference between a 65W and 45W CPU? Thanks.

Thanks. Would the Athlon X2 4050e be capable of occasional gaming on moderate settings?

It's not a gaming chip per se, but will be adequate given that you have a decent video card, since the vast majority of games are more dependent on the GPU than on the CPU. An 8600GT or anything above it will be fine IMO.
