The takeaway: Apple has unveiled its next budget smartphone, the iPhone 17e, featuring several upgrades over its predecessor. The most notable additions include MagSafe support, a more powerful processor, an improved cellular modem, enhanced screen protection, and double the base storage capacity. Despite these improvements, the iPhone 17e is expected to retain the same starting price as the model it replaces.

The iPhone 17e features a 6.1-inch OLED display with peak brightness reaching 1,200 nits. The screen is equipped with an improved anti-reflective coating and is protected by Apple Ceramic Shield 2.

The device is powered by the 3-nanometer Apple A19 processor, which includes a hexa-core CPU, quad-core GPU, and a 16-core neural engine optimized for machine learning workloads. Storage configurations are available in 256GB and 512GB variants.

Like the iPhone 16e, its successor also features a single rear-camera configuration. The 48MP Fusion Camera supports 2× telephoto zoom and captures 24MP images by default. Software photography features include Night Mode for improved low-light performance, Portrait Mode for natural depth-of-field background separation, and HDR processing for more accurate skin tone reproduction.

The camera system supports 4K video recording at 60 fps with Dolby Vision and spatial audio capture, enabling immersive playback on devices such as Apple AirPods and Apple Vision Pro. The iPhone 17e also introduces improved audio recording capabilities, including a machine-learning – driven "wind noise reduction" feature designed to enhance voice clarity in outdoor environments.

The iPhone 17e is equipped with the C1X modem, which Apple claims is up to 2× faster and 30 percent more energy efficient than the C1 modem used in the iPhone 16e. The company did not disclose the exact battery capacity, but states that the device is designed to provide all-day battery life under typical usage conditions. The iPhone 17e supports 15W Qi wireless charging with MagSafe compatibility.

Like its predecessor, the device includes satellite messaging functionality, allowing users to send and receive messages when outside cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. It also retains the Crash Detection safety feature, which is designed to detect severe vehicle collisions and automatically contact emergency services if needed.

On the software side, the iPhone 17e runs iOS 26 with the new Liquid Glass interface design. The device also supports the latest Apple Intelligence features, including Live Translation across Messages, FaceTime, Phone calls, and compatible Apple AirPods devices.

Additional AI-assisted capabilities include Visual Intelligence for object recognition, Call Screening, and Hold Assist for managing incoming calls.

The iPhone 17e will be offered in black, white, and soft pink color options. Pre-orders are scheduled to begin on March 4 in the US, the UK, Canada, China, India, and other major markets. General availability and shipping will start on March 11. Pricing begins at $599 for the 256GB configuration and rises to $799 for the 512GB model.

Not worth it.

Apple disconnect from real life resembles Nokia.

599 hardly can be called “budget”. Another flop just like Air.

LOL the ignorance. The 16e is the #4 selling phone worldwide as of the most recent quarter:

Last time I shopped for Apple phone in this price range, I got a refurbished max version. I honestly do not see any rational buyer to pick this cut version rather than a bit older model that looks like new and has all the features.

OS support. Each newer gen CPU hardware gets 1 year additional support so a 17e will get 2 years longer OS support than any iP15 and 1 year longer than any iP16 model.

It's not 2010 anymore. Even the cheap arse moto G lineup is pushing $400 now. That is a low end handset too. Anything below $300 these days are the uber cheap burner phones, the $50 pucks of yesteryear.

$6-700 was squarely in "budget flagship" territory before the Red Lung, so getting one for that price now is a great deal, especially when you consider 8+ years of support. And you have to consider the value of things like iMessage or Airtags that are Apple exclusive, along with the rest of the apple ecosystem if applicable.

Some people just dont like used phones. Some want the full 8 years of support.

Also those prices are highly dependent on other factors. I can go to apple's website right now, the cheapest pro max 16 is $1,029. The 15 pro max $1,019. A 16/plus model would be about the same price as a 17e, but would only get 6 years of updates VS the 17e's 8. And those plus models only have 128GB of storage, the 17e starts at 256 now. Is getting a phone with 75% the effective software lifespan and only 50% the internal storage for a 10% lower price really worth it? Even amortized over the lifespan of the device, the 17e winds up cheaper then the refurb 16/plus.

Now you get into the 14s and you get prices that are substantially lower, but now you have phones with only 4-5 years of support left. So still effectively about the same price per year of support as the 17e.

Sorry bud can’t agree with you. Not in this economy. I got groceries to pay for.

As someone else said, budget phones from Apple are great for longevity, not features. When looking at TCO, they're ideal. Any new phone from Apple will last more than 8 years and might need a $100 battery replacement. It will have a better CPU than an older phone too. This one has an A19 which is on par or better than a CPU in the previous gen A18 Pro: https://nanoreview.net/en/soc-compare/apple-a19-vs-apple-a18-pro

In the end, this phone despite being up to 3x the cost of old budget phones from 10 years ago that only lasted 2 or 3 years are still cheaper than them (especially considering inflation).

We all pay for groceries, that is irrelevant.

You can keep demanding $100 phones, but here's a reality: inflation exists. The cheap decent phones of decades past would cost in excess of $300 today. There is insufficient slave labor to make your phones any cheaper these days. And the 17e is a budget flagship. That class has existed for years, they were never $300 phones.

But you know how it goes. Wish in one hand, poo in the other, see which fills up first.

There are plenty of countries that would gladly offer their slave labor instead of Chinese workforce that is getting less and less attractive.
But I doubt anyone really wants to grow another less than democratic country into what China grew. It literally became second world power from the milk formula fed by the West.
It was a mistake, especially considering that every country that USSR supplied with weapons is now supplied by China.
It is not due to unavailability of slave labor but rather bigger political reasons.
