did you check the device manager, expand the sound ,video and make sure your audio driver is enabled.also try updating the driver.if you think the driver s files are corrupted then you have to uninstall and reinstall it.

start - control panel- system&maintenance-device manager.then click continue.
then find sound video . and expand that. if you see your sound driver, right click on it and left click on update.

i have windows xp i dont see system&mantinence in the xp control panel or classic view. would it be under a different tag?

There's several different methods. Try this one: rt click My Computer->Manage. Then double click on Device Manager

So last night i found the device manager, and saw that the multimedia controller needed to be installed. I looked further and found that this device was in pci slot 3. that would be the sound card i had recently installed. i downloaded a device driver but because it is zipped (even when using winrar) it seems to not have fully installed so i think i need to find a different download.

the card is a sound blaster audigy sb0090. could this sound card be the reason i have no volume mixer in my computer?

Start->Programs->Assesories->Entertainment->volume control->nothing exists

1) in device manager in sound....
disable each item, not 'uninstall', then enable the item that was working previously do you notice any NEW or MS added items? you may have conflict with another device
3) if you have the cd from the manufacture or have downloaded the sound driver , then uninstall it and REINSTALL from cd/file
