Battlefield 6 buries Call of Duty's franchise record with nearly 750,000 players at launch

Highly anticipated: Most of us have become accustomed to multiplayer games launching, only to break the servers. Remember Diablo 4's mess of a launch? Long queues and server crashes are the new normal. Today, Battlefield 6 developers said, "Not on our watch," while breaking rival CoD's long-standing concurrent player record.

Battlefield 6 just launched this morning and flooded servers almost immediately. Hundreds of thousands of players faced difficulties logging in, until EA and Battlefield Studios activated a dedicated queue to manage the extreme demand.

"Battlefield 6 launches today at 15:00 UTC and we anticipate many of you to login at the same time during this initial moment," Battlefield developers announced via X. "To help ensure a smooth and stable login experience for everyone, we're adding a queue system during this and other peak moments. Thanks for your patience as we launch Battlefield 6!"

Less than an hour after launch, Battlefield 6 recorded 606,000 concurrent players on Steam. Within a few more hours, that number climbed to 747,440, making it the second most-played game on Valve's platform behind only Counter-Strike 2. The milestone also places Battlefield 6 among the top 15 most-played games ever on Steam, surpassing Apex Legends and even topping the Call of Duty app's peak concurrent count of 491,670. As of this posting, the count has only slightly dipped to 691,379. This number is likely to climb over the weekend as players log in during their off time.

The August open beta had already hinted at strong interest, with a peak reaching over 500,000 concurrent players. The launch numbers suggest the franchise is reaching new heights in popularity on PC, though the total player count across consoles remains unknown. Sony and Microsoft do not release these numbers publicly.

Queues remain active but have reportedly been relatively short, with Steam users advised to restart their client if the "Play" button does not appear immediately. Battlefield developers emphasized that the system is designed to keep the launch smooth while letting in as many players as possible.

Portal mode, Battlefield 6's map-creation and remix platform, is already attracting attention from the community. Within hours, a player recreated the classic Call of Duty 4 map "Shipment," complete with chaotic, close-quarters combat. Fans can search for the map in Portal's community tab to play on the fan-made version. The creator, Matavatar, has teased more maps in development, including other Call of Duty classics and imaginative scenarios bridging franchises.

The queues, record-breaking player numbers, and early fan creativity demonstrate the strong reception Battlefield 6 has received. Publisher EA and Battlefield Studios appear to have successfully balanced high demand with server stability--something which is far too often a complete fiasco.

Everyone I talk to who has played it so far really likes it. Seems they decided not to repeat the mistakes of 2042 and instead take advantage of their main competitors screwups.
Middle Eastern royalty profiting from Western war franchises. Is this really winning?
Oh no, the Arabic billionaires are profiting from the Bang bang Wahoo! This is terrible! Only western DEI Black Rock billionaires can profit from bang bang Wahoo!

It is a video game. What matters is if it is fun.

I bet this has a lot to do with Microsoft increasing the price of game pass. They didn't know it at the time, but COD peaked before they took over. People are sick of COD and I honestly think Microsoft could take a huge loss from the purchase of Activison.

I'm not someone who like to bash Microsoft like a lot of tech people do, but it is shocking to see how badly they have messed up with gaming this entire generation. They should have bought Ubisoft if they needed to acquire a company. Ubi has a lot of potential that they never realize, they have a lot of solid IPs that they mismanage. Microsoft could have come in and replaced the management and made all their IPs better, and have something to show for their efforts. Instead they spent an insane amount of money on something they thought would capture a wide audience without realizing that audience already had one foot out the door.

Ordinarily I'd agree, but this is Electronic Arts we're talking about here so they're fundamentally incapable of creating a video game worth purchasing to begin with. Nothing I do in a game is fun if I do it while bent over a barrel and running 3 DRMs.

Did you not play the beta?

BF6 is a fun game, there's no denying that. It's lame that EA is being bought out by a shady group, but if you avoided games with shady investment groups behind them you'd barely be able to play anything.

I greatly dislike their DRM but I'm willing to give credit where it is due, Battlefield 6 looks like a good game. Not a great game, certainly not a battlefield game I'd be interested in, but still a good game made competently, which in the sea of devolved slop we call the AAA industry is an achievement.

We have to call out the successes when they happen if we want the industry to improve. I have no issue with BF6 and hope it continues to be a major success.

Precisely.

Every multi millionaire and up is sociopathic to at least some degree. Every company has slimy C suites and shady investors. Even in the indie space if you only buy from people you politically align with you'll find yourself with almost nothing to play.

Microsoft replacing the leaders and improving the IP would require them to understand what makes games good. As 343 industries demonstrated, they dont know a golden goose from their own arse. They became so sensitive to people "being mean" that they alienated most of the hardcore CoD fanbase who got tired of the nannying and bans, and most of those guys are moving over to Battlefield.

I agree that MS is going to suffer a massive loss from Activision. They overpaid by an order of magnitude. $6.8 billion would have been too much with their declining sales but $68 billion was just absurd valuation. Given they lost $1.3 billion last year I dont think MS will ever make their money back.

I have not liked any of the Battlefield games since BF1 TBH. But this one has my ears perked up. Maybe it's all the hype--so be it, if it is--but it's actually the first war game I've had any interest in in a long time.

Honestly, it`s a weird Frankenstein, because it has BF3/4 skins, BF1 animation coupled with COD gameplay (I.e. none or little weapon recoil, very fast pacing, sliding, rolling, mostly deathmatch maps). To the list of grievances I would add no community server, no suppression fire (LMGs are useless), no class restriction gear (a sniper can live forever healing himself), unrealistic sledgehammer, all-out-warfare maps with just infantry, no orders from squad leader, small maps, only two big maps, one is a remaster and the other some BF1 clone and the list could go on, that`s just from the top of my head.
If you like it go ahead, spend 70 bucks or 100 with season pass, for me this is not a BF game and certainly not worth the money in the current state. 750k players at launch, 100k in a month, by December 50k at best, that`s my two cents...

So far, I have noticed this thing a lot of people complained about: You cannot pick a male soldier. You are assigned a woman to play. And the dying screams of females are a bit annoying.
Heck, if I were playing it, all I could think of would be how many women would actually be in combat.
So yeah, need to unlock male classes to switch and annoying female soldier voices.

So much for realism...

Perfect. Not buying it. Was moderately hyped over this, but this is the tipping point. Mnope.
Another woke BS, for me it's a no-go

This and the "pick a woman because woke" are the best underrated comments here.
No issue, I'll NEVER spend any $$$ feeding these companies.
Playing my nice single player games as usual (Cyberpunk, warhammer) and not engaging in ANY discussions online, so they can go f themselves with the censorship.
Oh, and the DRM?
If I had any thought of giving any chance to this, the wokeness and the DRM made up my mind. Not paying even 20 bucks for this game in two years, DRM = NO BUY.

There's no little bird in the multiplayer. Every modern BF game has had the little bird. Disappointed.
