Hi,

Right now I have an old motherboard and CPU with Win 10 22H2 (fully updated).

I am planning to upgrade the motherboard, CPU, and storage device, reinstall Win 10 22H2, and finally upgrade to Win 11.

I have downloaded the latest Win 10 22H2 iso and used Rufus 4.5 (latest ver.) to create a bootable USB.

The download of the Win 10 22H2 iso went through without any errors.

For Rufus, I used these settings:

Partition Scheme: GPT
Target system: UEFI

In ‘Format Options’, I set File system as NTFS, with Cluster size: 4096 (default).

When I tested the bootable Win 10 22H2 USB, I found that my PC recognized it as bootable.

I selected the UEFI USB for booting to test out the bootable USB.

After about 30 seconds, I got a Blue Screen of Death. I could not locate the memory dump in the Windows directory.

The error message is "Kmode exception not handled".

Some Goggling suggests that the bootable USB should have been formatted FAT32, not NTFS.

My brother, who is a hardware technician, insists that the USB format is not the cause of the BSOD.

He suggested an antivirus could have caused the BSOD. I have Windows Defender and the free version of Malwarebytes (both fully updated).

Can someone please help resolve this problem?

Is the error occurring because of some problem in the bootable USB or because my current partition is MBR?

Do I need to recreate the bootable USB (maybe even download the Win 10 22H2 iso again)?

I have given the specs of my PC below.

Current PC details:

Motherboard: BIOSTAR Group H61MLV3 7.0
CPU: 3.00 gigahertz Intel Pentium G2030
RAM: DDR3 8 GB
Storage: Samsung 300 GB SATA
Partition Scheme: MBR
Boot mode: Legacy/ UEFI
O/S: Win 10 22H2 (Home)

Connected hardware:

1. HP printer (connected but off)
2. XP-Pen tablet (always on, there is no on/off switch)
3. Ethernet router (disabled during the test)
4. USB Bluetooth for headphones (on)
5. WDD portable drive (disconnected but cable is connected to a USB port)
6. USB dongle for wireless internet (as a backup if the Ethernet card goes down)

Target PC details:

Motherboard: MSI PRO H610M-E DDR5 mATX Motherboard
CPU: Intel Core i3 12100 12th Gen Generation Desktop PC Processor
RAM: 16 GB DDR5
Storage: Solid State Device, Crucial BX500 500GB 2.5-inch SATA
Partition Scheme: GPT
Boot mode: UEFI

ETA:

I am sorry if there is some confusion.

I don’t have the new rig yet.

I tested the bootable USB on my old rig (on which I created it) to see that it worked.
