BSOD 0x00000024 even after chkdsk

I turned on my computer and got the BSOD, with "techical info": 0x00000024 and some other things like 0x... in parenthesis but nothing else below that.

I got a windows XP cd (not mine) and got to the recovery console, and I have run chkdsk /r a couple of times. When I exit to restart the computer, I still get the same BSOD. What can I do?

chkdsk seems to be the most useful advice out there, but it isn't working for me. I've seen one recommendation to use fixmbr, but the computer asked me some intimidating stuff when I tried, so I chose not to.

PS. I can't restart in any safe mode because the computer seems freeze as it displays a bunch of code on the screen, finally freezing on "MUPS" or something like that
