Can you copy explorer.exe from one computer to another?

Dec 15, 2008
  1. Hello all,

Anti-Malware has for some reason quarantined and deleted my explorer.exe file and now when I start WinXP i stare at a black desktop (just the wallpaper is displayed).

Is it possible to copy the explorer.exe file from my old HDD (with the same WinXP but with perhaps fewer updates), to my current one? Has anybody done it?

    Will I encouter stability issues?

I've successfully done that (same version of explorer.exe)
But due to the hundreds of issues it will cause, you will probably format anyway

Try getting to Safe mode (F8 on system startup)
Or remove the harddrive and scan it, in another computer (plugged in as a secondary drive)

If you do ever get it booted up:
