DVD optical drives now have the highest failure rate of any device. They seldom last much longer than a year, and if they are heavily used, perhaps only 7 months in some cases.
The failure can be cased by a burned out laser, a slipped or broken drive belt or wheel, a chip failure, or whatever.
Nice thing is, they are relatively cheap to replace in a Desktop... Prices here are 24.95 to 39.96... for a DVD CD-RW, and as low as $20 online.
For longer life, get a Plextor, Yamaha, LG, Samsung, or Pioneer. Avoid Sony, Acer, Asus, HP, HLDS.
