China pulls the plug on Windows 10 for government machines months ahead of schedule

In a nutshell: China is removing Windows from government systems sooner than planned, telling some state-linked organizations to uninstall a customized edition of Windows 10 several months ahead of schedule. The order brings Microsoft's attempt to build a version specifically for Beijing closer to an end. It also supports the country's long-running campaign to replace foreign hardware and software with domestic alternatives.

Bloomberg reports that China's Ministry of State Security recently issued the instruction to affected organizations. C&M Information Technologies, the developer of the special operating system, had planned to retire it in February 2027.

People familiar with the matter said the accelerated timetable was prompted by data-security concerns, though officials did not identify any vulnerabilities.

Microsoft said it was unaware of any security incident involving the product and that it continues to receive regular security updates. China's State Council Information Office and CMIT did not respond to requests for comment.

The directive arrived just weeks before President Donald Trump's planned meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, amid continuing tensions over technology and national security. The accelerated schedule reportedly surprised some state-agency employees, though there is no indication that it was directly connected to the summit.

CMIT was established in 2016 as a joint venture between Microsoft and the state-owned China Electronics Technology Group Corporation. Windows 10 China Government Edition arrived a year later, following negotiations involving Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Chinese finance officials.

The OS was based on Windows 10 Enterprise but modified for government use. Microsoft said it removed features that officials didn't need, including OneDrive, gave authorities control over telemetry and updates, and supported China's own encryption algorithms. China Customs, the City of Shanghai, and state-owned Westone Information Technology were among its first pilot customers.

The customized build ultimately failed to win the kind of adoption Microsoft wanted. Reuters recently reviewed six Chinese government computer procurement guides published between December 2023 and May 2026. Five did not recommend Microsoft, while the sixth listed Windows 10 China Government Edition with unspecified additional management requirements.

China has been lessening its reliance on foreign tech for years. The country introduced government purchasing rules requiring "safe and reliable" processors and operating systems in 2023. The approved CPU list consisted entirely of Chinese products, while Intel and AMD chips, Windows, and foreign database software were being phased out.

Domestic replacements include operating systems from Kylin Software and Tongxin Software Technology, most of which are based on Linux. China has also backed openKylin, an open-source project intended to replace Windows and macOS.

As a result of these policies, Microsoft's presence in China has been shrinking. At least 15 of its Chinese branch offices and joint ventures have closed in the past five years. However, the company remains in the country, where it sells cloud and AI services to local businesses operating internationally.

Surprised they waited so long. But this is just a tiny step toward the goal Xi's China is moving for the last decade. He wiped the government clean, making sure there is not one man to oppose him.
Life there will be getting worse like it always does when a dictator begins to strengthen his power.

Like in the usa?

I was running Windows XP a while back and a mafia neighbor sent me an email with everything I did on windows the previous day, from the songs I played to the websites I visited. I didn't have any spyware on the computer either.

"months ahead of schedule" is a nothingburger, that's the same as on schedule. And issuing directives does not mean it will happen on schedule, let alone ahead of it.

As China can't create their own OS but at the same time does not want to use Windows officially, they are frantically testing replacement options that may create the illusion of partial independence. Windows will remain the backbone for years.

With China developing their own home-grown stuff, you know it's full-blown backdoors and surveillance. At least in the U.S. no matter how intrusive Windows is, we don't have a social credit rating system like China.

If MS sells this China version Windows to US public, lots of people would buy it including me...! MS also makes lots of money off of that...!

Not yet anyway...give it about a decade. Flock cameras already know where your vehicles are, most people are switching to their phone to pay/card to pay foregoing cash. Your phone knows where you are, your vehicle knows where you are, your smartwatch knows where you are and what you are doing, security cameras all over the place. It's just a matter of time til they flip the switch and if you don't behave, they shut off your ability to purchase anything. Heck, I'll even bet they will start sending traffic tickets to you in email because the GPS on your vehicle, along with the flock cameras detected you speeding, running a red light etc. Oh, and if you fail to pay the ticket, they'll just stop your vehicle from
starting...since it has GPS/Satellite/Wifi and a huge computer, they can just kill it.
1984, you were just a few decades late.

I would not be surprised if China had some kind of homegrown GNU/Linux-based distribution coming.

And who could blame for that ?
Windows has been getting worse and worse.

Microsoft removed OneDrive, surrendered control over telemetry and updates, and supported Chinese encryption standards, yet Windows was still considered too foreign.

This could become the largest government-backed Linux compatibility test ever conducted. If domestic platforms succeed at this scale, Microsoft may find the lost market difficult to recover even if relations improve.

I say this with a complete respect for the Chinese people. China may one day become the richest and most powerful country on earth, but it will never lead the world the way that Rome, Great Britain, and the United States have. A country can only lead those who are willing to be led. And China continuously makes it clear that while they are physically on this planet, they are not of this world. And please don't pour flames on the comment. I say this merely as an observation, not as a statement of philosophy.

It is coming here when they switch us to an all digital banking system, they will shut your bank account down for saying the wrong thing!🤬
