A hot potato: The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, better known as TSMC, is investing billions in its US facilities. That's welcome news for the economy, but it's definitely not pleasing China. One of the Asian nation's newspapers has gone so far as to accuse the American government of tricking TSMC into building fabs in the US and claim that the country is stealing technology developed in "our Taiwan region."

The South China Morning Post reports that an editorial post in the Chinese nationalist tabloid Global Times slammed TSMC's investment in its Arizona plant as "a dark turn" in the global semiconductor industry.

TSMC's Arizona facilities will include an upgraded 4nm fab and a 3nm fab for producing the most advanced chips. The Global Times claims TSMC's decision to invest in this cutting-edge technology within the US shows that the nation's government tricked the company and that Washington was stealing the latest tech from "our Taiwan region," a reference to China's claim of sovereignty over the island.

The Global Times is affiliated with the People's Daily—the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party—so Beijing will doubtlessly have approved the piece. China's government has not made official comments about TSMC's Arizona facilities, unlike the CHIPS Act, which it has repeatedly called discriminatory.

"We must ring the alarm bell louder […] the US may pressure chip makers in other countries as it did to TSMC," the editorial reads. It compared the US to a bull in a China shop, smashing the semiconductor market to pieces. The paper also chided the US and Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party for "hollowing out" Taiwan.

China has been vocal in its objections to the Biden administration's restrictions on its chip industry, which have impacted Nvidia and AMD, cover the export of chipmaking tools, and have even resulted in Chinese Americans leaving the industry or being forced to give up their US citizenship if they want to remain.

TSMC recently confirmed it was more than trebling its investment in the Arizona fabs from $12 billion to $40 billion. The site will create tens of thousands of jobs and have a total manufacturing output of 600,000 wafers per year. Unlike the rest of the tech industry, the world's largest contract chipmaker isn't going through a tough time right now; it recorded a 50.2% year-on-year revenue rise in November as sales reached $7.27 billion.

China is worried it will lose a massive bargaining chip (pun intended) in case it invaded Taiwan. It could have held entire world market captive and could have bargained it's way out of sanctions etc. Now that leverage is slipping away so CCP is panicking.

The US' response should simply read: "taiwan is a free country".
Russia is the third paranoid, kind of three stooges: Moe (USA), Larry (China) and Curly (Russia).
Dont forget the 4th: Shemp (EU)
I thought this site only has putin drones
The nature of the drones depends on the political views of the commenter. Schrodinger's drone, if you will.

Never forget that it was BOTH major parties in the US that sold out to China in the early 90's. They created that monster and happily reaped the benefits. It was only when they realized China was just stealing all the tech that they'd been given to manufacture that anyone started to care.

But the USA doesn't think Taiwan is a free country.
The USA thinks its free enough to dedicate a carrier fleet to it 24/7, but since when do facts matter?

It wasnt the theft that did it, it was china getting so big and powerful they could threaten the grip on power said politicians had.

They probably think so but history would disagree with them. Russians wiped cleaned everything from Germany after win, advanced equipment, scientists. Fifty years after there it was, poor nation lacking most basic items of comfort from where people ran away risking long imprisonment.
I dont think China will hold other countries captive possessing the most advanced chip making company. I think other company would cut their ties with China and it will follow the way of USSR.
China is not USSR because it began to behave like a human being rather than a rabid animal.
That and nothing else brought them wealth and advancement.

*Pokes Russia with a Tomahawk*
soooo....want to talk about Ukraine?
Haha.
Russia does not respect anyone who does not have power.
Georgia and Crimea are a both examples.
Right now, they already talking about treaty. You know why? Because Ukrainian army killed nearly 90 thousands of those poor uneducated souls. The only reason Ukraine still has their own government is because they are fighting. And the day USA stops poking Russia with tomahawks, I will be worried.

The only reason ukraine still has a government is because the US government is funding their war. Without those funds that conflict would have been over long ago.

Nothing to see here - This is a internal propaganda story.

Chinese are very nationalistic - why not - cut off for long period - history of British and Japanese interference - Chinese horribly treated a for a long time in west , working to build railroads etc . Lack of freedom of press.
A history of firsts - printing, gunpowder etc - brainwashing from an early age/at school.

So easy to manipulate - Yet lots of silly nationalistic people in West - believing the most inane BS - huge convoys of criminals marching towards their borders etc

Secondly we made China, we made Walmart etc

Thirdly the them or us - is a silly narrative for gullible or naïve people - we need a win win for everyone.
Especially as more pandemics will arise , climate change, food crisis ( nitrogen = energy = much bigger yields) , water etc - peace
