  2. I must have missed something, perhaps while I was busy playing Ghosts and revisiting Apache Air Assault. Maybe this game has an inbuilt dopamine inducer via the use of rapidly flashing colours..

    It's popularity is likely due to a retro feel of side scrollers. With some innovative new elements, however simple it brings more to the table for some people than 'better graphics' for tired old genres.
