Starbound, the space-exploration epic by Chucklefish Games, has managed to sell over 1 million copies. The news comes straight from the developer, who composed an excited tweet, complete with a Keanu Reeves inspired meme. The Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure reference is accompanied simply by “#whoa,” summing up just how developers feel about reaching such an important milestone so quickly.

Starbound has only been around (in beta) since early last December, and selling so many copies in just a month's time is certainly no small feat. This news comes hot on the heels of another red hot release, DayZ standalone, which has seen similar numbers with around 800,000 units sold in less than a month. These two titles are proof that Indie development is more than just nickle-dime successes. To see such a vast amount of interest in such a short time-span should give a lot of hope to any aspiring indie teams out there.

The Starbound beta can be grabbed for $15 from either Steam or the developer's website. You'll want to keep in mind that while this game is still in beta, Chucklfish warns that it will be performing periodic character wipes. That means you'll lose any progress you may have made through the game during each wipe-cycle. Still, if you want to see what all the fuss is about before the game officially releases, or you want to give developers a hand by reporting bugs and glitches, now is your chance.

I must have missed something, perhaps while I was busy playing Ghosts and revisiting Apache Air Assault. Maybe this game has an inbuilt dopamine inducer via the use of rapidly flashing colours..

It's popularity is likely due to a retro feel of side scrollers. With some innovative new elements, however simple it brings more to the table for some people than 'better graphics' for tired old genres.
