Coinbase CEO fired engineers who refused to use AI

that may be, but better to comply while looking for a new job, this is ultimately their failure
Maybe maybe not. I refused to comply with a return to work order, my attitude was fire me if they didn't like it, and I am sure those people at Coinbase felt the same way. Like me I am sure they could easily find placement at a competitor.

True. But use them in the first week since we sent out an email about it or get mass fired is terrible leadership.

I mean there were literally employees that were on vacation for the entire period between the email and the firings.
Well that's between those employees and their HR department honestly as far as I'm concerned it would be like my boss telling me I want you to start using the t6 bits to take apart the HPs and stop using that flathead even though it fits and I keep using the flathead yeah he should fire me.

You are missing the point. Yes, in most states, you can fire people for almost any reason.

But if you fire people for stupid reasons and are an a--hole about it, your remaining employees are going to be negatively impacted by it. May look for another job because of your ego, etc.

CEO (probably): You engineers there that do stuff around here. Use "AI" that is prone to errors and cannot actually do the work properly for you or else! Oh. You don't want to use it? FIRED!

Sounds like a model for failure if you ask me.

It's a crypto firm... It's whole business model is based on extracting the most for it's suck... customers before folding it's doors. The fact they see the latest overhyped fad as a means to increase it's march to the edge simply shows how poorly thought out the whole AI craze is IMHO.

That's for the boss and share holders to worry about you the employee have agreed to do work for money as instructed, that's where that ends

These are employees not soldiers or slaves. There are limits to what your boss can make you do - especially when it wasn't explicitly in your hiring contract.

"You the employee" can also go work somewhere else too and in this case it would be totally the inept boss' fault that he a) wasted company time and money hiring replacements and b) lost productivity in the meantime. Even without leaving you can also work less enthusiastically because your boss is jerk and you aren't sure if you will still have a job next week.

Yes you can leave not saying you can't, what I am saying is an employer is well within their rights to require you to use the tools or be fired.

So he just fired staff without considering consequences to sudden departures and disruptions to workflows and business? Or were so many positions unimportant and redundant to begin with?
