Computer will not boot

I have a compaq desktop computer that will not get past the title screen and wont boot up. I cannot hit f8 or anything on the keyboard to let me get anywhere so that I can try to fix it. I would like to get it to boot up and possibly save some of the info that is ont the computer my daughter has alot of files on there that she would like to keep so I am trying to do it without formatting the harddrive. Can anyone help?

Do you mean the windows title screen?

know its the COMPAQ screen with the F keys at the bottom.....the POST screen.....I am trying to fix it and not lose all the info on it.

why dont u just take out the hard drive and put it in another machine
