Conroe coming sooner than you think

Conroe's release comes leaping ahead.
Intel had a financial conference call yesterday, and there were some juicy new details revealed, including the fact that Conroe has been pulled forward for release.

Paul Otellini, Intel's CEO, said yesterday that Conroe and Merom, the laptop version of the chip, will hit in the third quarter of this year, rather than the fourth quarter as previously planned.

This puts the next-gen Core chip in the July-September timeframe.

Quarter two, which we are currently in, would be used to lay the grounds needed to introduce Conroe, Otellini said. He also suggested that the chips in the Core lineup - Conroe, Merom and Woodcrest, the server chip - were "The most compelling product lineup in years."

So it seems like PC gamers looking for a massive leap in CPU performance won't have to wait quite as long as they might have thought. It seems that both CPU companies are pushing hard to woo new buyers, as we revealed earlier today that AMD will be launching its AM2 platform ahead of schedule, on May 23.

If I was to guess (and thats's pretty much all anybody can do at this point), I would say that Intel is releasing it to give AMD less time to come up with something equal or better. which will allow them to bring gamers back over to their side.

die hard AMD fans like myself will wait a while after the release to see what AMD comes out with before we switch over to the dark side

we already have plenty of Conroe vs. AM2 debates on this forum, each side of the arguments are theoretical and will continue to be until their final releases.
