CPU Upgrade

Guys, I want a decent CPU to use with my GTX 1060 6GB, strict budget here, would a Ryzen 1500x be good for the next few years? I'm a mild gamer who plays occasional triple A games, no editing or nothing, TY

I'm upgrading from a FX-8350.

Would a Ryzen 1600 be even worth the extra money at 60 fps only? I would have to wait quite a while to save for it.

Firstly I have to ask. Do you have or are you going to buy an AM4 motherboard?

I think the Ryzen 1600 would be worth it. But you need a compatible motherboard to go with the CPU.

If you don't already have the AM4 board, you may want to wait until Feb. This way you will know about compatibility with 2nd gen. You might decide you want a 400 series board.

If you already have an AM4 board, I do believe the 1600 would be a worthy purchase. But like I mentioned above, you might decide you want a second generation Ryzen. Launch date is only a month away.

Yeah it looks like waiting would be a better idea, I haven't bought that mobo yet, and it looks like there may yet be a better option soon. TY

Wait a moment, according to AMD 2nd gen won't be out until april, but will the Ryzen 5 2400G APU coming out in Feb 12 have the same power as the Ryzen 1500x or 1600? I don't want to wait until april.

Ryzen 5 1600 would be my choice as well. I haven't seen any indications that the X-series are worth the price premium, they certainly do not seem to be better overclockers? It really also depends on the software and games you're running - if they are all using 4 cores at most, the 1600 may seem a bit overkill. However with 6+ core CPUs having now firmly landed in the mainstream segment, we will definitely see 6+ core support coming in the future. So all things considered and for me, I would definitely get the Ryzen 5 1600 over the 1500, just for the additional cores and threads.

However, the FX-8350 isn't a terrible CPU either. While I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy a FX CPU in this day and age - I would have to ask why you cannot wait until April? Are you having any particular problems with performance in specific games? What resolution are you gaming at? I'd like to think that a FX-8350 with a GTX 1060 6GB should be sufficient for 60fps at 1080p?

I'd say wait for some more time as AMD 2gen Ryzen CPUs will be out in 2nd Quarter of 2k18 and as hopes are high they will be good with performance and price so have some patience till then use your old buddy :)

Yeah the best move would be too wait till April for 2nd gen, but I don't want to wait any longer. I'll go with that motherboard and R5 1600. I only play at 1080p 60fps, so holding out won't make a big difference either way. TY

You'll be fine with the R5 1600. It should be more than enough for current and future games and you'll have an easy upgrade path later on.

A quick tip if you have a 60Hz monitor. You can try OCing the panel to 70-75Hz. You can use CRU (Custom Resolution Utility) or go in the Nvidia panel and set some custom resolutions there.
here's an article that might help you with it: http://www.pcgamer.com/how-to-overclock-your-monitor-to-a-higher-refresh-rate

I'm running my laptop's monitor at 70Hz :D

Dude I had no idea you could do it, I'm running my BenQ monitor at 75 and testing, thanks!

Think it over before you dip into ryzen or kabylake, I'm surprised no one hasn't mentioned you will need to step up to ddr4 as well changing mobo sockets. =/
My mobo, cpu and ram, nearly cost me 400 bucks, thankfully with some decent sales in xmas I got away with spending 345.00 dollars top.

Getting away from the 8350 is a good idea right about now, sorry techspot lovers but fx 6350 real hexa-core beats a fake 8 core by amd.
If your parts are in good order just go ahead and sell them online with ebay or your local newspaper in your city.
Take the sales money you from it, mash it together with whatever money you are saving up BAM new computer.

Right now prices for RAM are sky high. I'm even considering looking for second hand sticks of DDR4 memory (at least 2666MHz) since RAM is one of the more "safe" things you can buy used.
Have you tried looking for something like that in your region? Maybe you can find 8GB at the same price as that 4GB new stick of RAM.

I wouldn't suggest you to overclock a 75hz monitor. Most of them have the same panels and switchers that the typical 60hz monitor do, so they are already overclocked. Pushing them further produces heat that they probably can't deal with, resulting in degradation sooner rather than later.

I think he meant that he OCed his BenQ monitor at 75Hz :D
