Upgrading During the DRAM Apocalypse with AMD's $75 CPU

Just show the world is of of whack, and nothing makes any sense.

Ray Tracing is still crap don't matter what setup you have.

I'll upgrade again in 4-5 years no rush, I'll wait for DDR6 and AM6. Maybe even Intel if they manage to make a comeback.

Don't rush to upgrade or buy new system, in this time if you have a half decent system already.
 
I was going to do an overhaul of a couple of my older systems but I ended up getting a deal on a few 5900x's instead of retiring my zen 1 systems from my rack. I was looking forward to spending a few days over the holidays building some new systems and configuring them but these RAM prices are crazy.
 
It almost feels like they’re deliberately trying to milk the people of every cent to pick up the companies’ entire unsold inventory piece by piece, by orchestrating deliberate crises or manufacturing news.

The only way to win is to not play the game.
 
After reading the article, I'm mostly just left with the question who would use a RTX 5090 to measure the performance of the 5500.
 
DDR4 prices are getting silly in the UK for 8GB sticks and above (2666 and faster). Tried a few second hand sticks but could only get 32GB to work (the other 3 16GB sticks wouldn't post). Oh well will get the money back but really wanted to max out the motherboard (only supports up to 64GB). Plenty of games will still run happily and nothing new looks that interesting at the moment.

The use the best graphics card WITH a low resolution to put the most stress on the CPU. It makes sense when you look at the charts when benchmarked at 4K. Not a lot of difference between CPUs at 4k because the graphics are the bottleneck, not the cpu.
 
Just trying to make sure they can squeeze that last few extra bucks out of ya before poors can't afford to own PCs anymore.

I have two systems built with Ryzen 5 5600s, two additional systems built with Ryzen 5 5600G cpus (which also has the L3 cache cut in half just like the 5500), and one system built with a Ryzen 5 5500. The 5500 cpu cost me $65. In daily use, I notice very little difference between any of them. When I bought the 5500 for $65, the next available option was was at least 2x that price, but was certainly NOT 2X the performance of the 5500. So for me, the 5500 performs great for the price/my use case. And in the end, that is all that matters.

Because this is an article measuring CPU and memory scaling, so a very high end GPU is used to remove bottlenecks.

I'm left with the question of why you keep asking these kinds of questions when it has been explained to you multiple times. Little slow on the uptake?
 
Prices are going up for components 🙉 - I blame workarounds to the memory issues, eg resorting to DDR4, using laptop memory, etc. Doesn't fix the cost of storage.

The situation is especially clear in markets like Australia, where the Ryzen 5 5500 is currently the cheapest AM4 processor still in stock at $129 AUD.

I purchased recently a new AMD Ryzen 5700X OEM, for AUD$110 😂

People who bought the Ryzen 5700X3D truly got the best bargain of the entire PC DIY market history.
 
I have more than my share of Zen 3 CPUs (6 from 5500 thru 5800X3D) and ya know what? The 5500 matches well with a lot of games and GPUs, so at $75 it's a great option. And there are better options for a bunch more money for those games that require more.

It's all good.

Weird that ray tracing isn’t crap in my system. A 5800x3D or better, and a 4070ti super/5070ti and it’s all lovely. Are you sure you have experienced it running properly?

Yes, buddy. I guess you are the only one that don't see a 30% - 40% drop in performance then. That you have to enable up-scaling & frame gen, just to make it playable in most cases.
 
Every year there's always something folks have to do to cobble systems together. I wonder if the whole system will ever run on all cylinders again?

I was thinking the same, like everyone gets a chance to have a "crisis" so they can jack up prices. Next year it will be motherboards, and then monitors or something.
