Cyberpunk 2077 dev says "we don't f**k around" after reasons for game's 18+ rating leak

What just happened? Cyberpunk 2077 hasn’t yet been rated by the likes of the ESRB and PEGI, but Brazil’s game ratings board has accidentally revealed that the RPG will be 18+ in the country, along with a list of what content we can expect to see. One of the developers has responded to the leak, confirming that “We don’t f**k around.”

The information came from Brazil’s Ministry of Justice last week. Not too surprisingly, it was quickly taken down, but not before it was captured for all to see on Reddit, which helpfully translated the content list.

As we’ve seen in the trailers, Cyberpunk 2077 is definitely a game aimed at adults—something the list confirms. It includes everything from foul language and nudity, to “sexual pleasurement” and violent acts. But the one piece of content that gives the game a “not recommended for ages under 18” rating in Brazil is “cruelty.” According to the Brazilian National Secretariat of Justice, cruelty is defined as "Realistic scene of violence, in a sadistic way, and which inflicts intense physical pain,” and gives an example of a “Man wants to take revenge and hangs another man on a tree and pulls out his teeth and fingers before killing him,” ouch.

While CD Projekt Red hasn’t made any official statements regarding the leak, the game’s lead quest designer, Pawel Sasko, gave his opinion on Twitter:

Last year, CD Projekt Red announced that Cyberpunk 2077 would feature motion-captured sex scenes, which will be viewed from the protagonist’s first-person perspective. But, as GamesRadar notes, the content list doesn’t include “explicit sex,” which is another 18+ advisory in Brazil, so don’t expect porn-levels of detail.

CD projekt devs always make characters who, at best, fall in grey area of moral spectrum. That makes them so much more understandable and realistic.
There is a reason why we cringe hard seeing an all good hero. Nobody is good or bad. We are just the product of circumstances we are in.
Regarding the violence, well, just look at our world. Everyone is corrupt to some extent and there are no good guys. Drug cartels routinely do stuff infinitely more heinous than anything even this game can show. Even the so called defenders of democracy are drone striking hapless people even today.

Every single one of those warnings also applies to Far Cry 3, 4 or 5.

There are limits on the level of sex these games can have because no developer wants the dreaded Adults Only label or bans for excessive violence.

If any studio could tolerate an AO rating, it would be CDPR - they're their own boss and storefront. I think they own the IP for Cyberpunk as well, so its not like the Witcher where they have an author and book publisher to keep happy.

If you control the entire supply chain, from production to sale, you have a lot of freedom to put whatever content you want in your product. The only place they couldn't control the sale would be on the console side, but even then, I don't think Microsoft or Sony would ban the game. They might ban it from their digital stores though, and whether Amazon carried it would be a toss-up (but I suspect Amazon wouldn't care)

Not saying they will, but that they could.

I personally see no reason at all for sex in a game.

It doesn't add to the game in virtually any way. with the exception of creating controversy or advertisement through manufactured outrage.

For example: Duke Nukem 3D on the PC had a short clip of Duke engaging in sex through audio only. It was a joke. But now, you look at games like God of War and Wolfenstein and their are sex scenes with panties around ankles. Why? It doesn't add to gameplay. It only makes the game harder to obtain by people in countries who are subject to ESRB/ratings.

Most of the population makes up whatever morals they think is right at the time. They also change them as they think something they know is bad shouldn't be. A character's morals in a game is based on your own decisions and what you do.

"There is a reason why we cringe hard seeing an all good hero"
Don't lump me into your "we". I would prefer an all good hero. There is only one who has ever existed that is, and will be returning to lay judgement. Everybody is bad - that is, a sinner. Lying, cheating, stealing, hating, blasphemy, adultery. We all do it. I am glad you can see that as most cannot.

"Everyone is corrupt to some extent and there are no good guys"
Yep, I agree. Most people think they are good people though... www.goodpersontest.com

Techspot - thank you for this article. I will do a hard pass on this game. Same reason why I never bought GTA V.

Suite yourself mate but not playing GTA V or Cyberpunk for 'moral' reasons is absurd in my opinion.

You do realize that most of us players won't even harm a little fly in real life, right?
Games don't induce violence and I can confirm that I never felt the urge to do any of the stupid crap I do in game like shooting RPGs at helicopters in GTA. Just like I don't feeling bayonetting people after watching a war movie or become an assassin after watching John Wick.

It's almost as if people know the difference between what's fiction and what's real life. Who could have thought!

So in your opinion, because it's a game, I can do whatever I want without morals? I guess you would love playing that game called JFK? Judging me because I prefer not to buy nor play a game that is immoral to me is quite selfish of you. Are you going to judge me for not going to strip clubs or buying pornography that you would?

So you're saying 'most" have never used a flyswatter eh? hah. I never did state that they induce violence in you so be careful trying to insinuate I am. You however cannot state with 100% fact there aren't people it does - especially those on drugs. It numbs the soul like horror movies as a kid versus laughing at them as an adult. Speaking of a soul, it's not just actions, but every *thought*, word, and deed that God will judge us by.

It's almost as if people know the difference between morals and no morals! Who could have thought! ;)

It does not seem as though I can play as the "good guy" in this game, so I will not be buying (which means supporting/promoting) this kind of game. Sorry to disappoint anyone else in my choice. There are plenty of other games out there. :) Thank you for this article!

I am also an absurdist who won't play GTA 5 or this . I don't mind violence generally - But I hate violence against women/children - I hate sadistic movies and will not watch them like Saw .
I don't watch anime with stupid fan service etc - I don't view plastic porn stars doing sexless sex etc .
Life is short - I can find my happiness where I want .
As I said I can watch violence movies- I can play a a character with faults - but not some sicko sadist or rapist .

Remember what Jack Nicholson about playing the joker.

Wow, you guys must be fun at party's...

I for one am looking forward to Cyberpunk. Sex, violence, cruelty, all adds to the atmosphere of the world they're building.

I find it funny how people here can compare violence from GTA to violence in The Witcher 3. GTA's is cartoony and absurd, The Witcher 3 it's a necessary evil to tell the story and helps build the world.

If it's 18+ so I can play a game that isn't all care bears and soft candy sweets but a nitty gritty hardcore thriller, so be it, I see no problem at all, I'm not even sure why this made news?

Looks so nice. Why arnt more people talking about this game! I was playing valorant the other day but I think this will be my new muse. I needed a VPN to download valorant though so I got the PureVPN 7-day trial, I wonder if I will need it for cyberpunk as well

So your idea of "fun" at parties is demented killing of people, violence, cruelty, and the chance of getting sexual diseases or a baby? That's disturbing. Yeah, you can count me out. Evil is not "necessary" as many other games and parties can attest to. Yes, I have tons of fun. No, this game is not needed and plenty of other games people with morals can play.

What is wrong with you? How boring would a game be if it was following my real life? I go to work, drive sensibly, eat, go to sleep etc...

The whole point of a single player game like this is to take you out of real life. To give you an experience in a completely different world.

PG games can be fun, Mario games or pretty much all first party Nintendo games are a testament to that. Zelda is also quite the experience.

Cyberpunk 2077 is an experience for adults, not kids, therefore has been rated appropriately.

My "fun at parties" jab is purely aimed at your inability to remove what happens in a game to real life. I'd consider that far more disturbing...

I am a sinner is what is wrong with me, but that I am a repentant one is good. Hopefully one day you will realize there is more to life outside of imaginary games than work/drive/eat/sleep. Sounds like a classic millennial only looking at their cell phone instead of the real world. You really have no idea how exciting my life is. You think someone who knows how to have fun outside of extravagant sinful/deadly acts or video games is far more disturbing? To each their own I guess. I used to play crazy games, but not any more. You should not shame me for having fun how I choose to. That's also classic liberal behavior.

This article sure has shown how people's thoughts are behind a computer screen. The sales numbers of this game will show most are like this though. You are one of most. “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." Matthew 7:13-14
I hope the best for you. Take care.

I hear you. I can't play an evil character in any game. I also can't engage in any kind of virtual cruelty. What people will do in private represents what is really inside them.

As a Christian myself, this is probably the worst thing I have ever read. Yes, the games people play can and will be violent, and yes, they can be sexually provocative, but why would *you* yourself judge others for what they play?
I, myself, play GTAV, do story, upgrade cars, etc. Would that lead me to robbing banks, spraying innocent people with bullets, or such outside? No.
I go to church, pray, and generally show the upmost kindness to others.
This is one of those classic “I’m Christian therefore I’m better than you” moments that I absolutely despise in other Christians. They’re nothing more that boastful sinners.

This sounds like it's starting to turn personal. Let's keep it on point... 2077. Some will love and and some will hate it.

To quote Superintendent Chalmers, Simpsons: Take it outside, God Boy... Don't like, then don't play.

But let's keep personal religious theories out. If "God" could read my mind, I would have been dead long ago.

Haha, I'm well versed in the Simpsons. You're right. Religion (man-made rituals) sucks. There is something to be said why and how a person's life has changed outside of religion.

"I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
Matthew 12:36-37

He does though. Careless word=thought. It's why people want God out of everything. If you don't want God in your life, you will get your wish when you pass away. It's by grace that we are still here today. I could have passed away last night. I'm glad I am still here. I hope the rest of you are as well. Have a great day.
