Streaming music provider Deezer has acquired podcast and talk radio show aggregator Stitcher in a move that could help put the Paris-based company on a more level playing field with competing service providers such as Rdio and Spotify in the US. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The San Francisco-based aggregator’s catalog includes more than 35,000 podcasts and radio shows from 12,000 or so providers including BBC, NPR, Wall Street Journal, Marc Maron, Fox News and CBS Radio, just to name a few.

In a recent interview on the matter, Deezer US CEO Tyler Goldman said users will be able to continue to access podcasts and radio shows through Stitcher’s Android and iOS apps and on its website for now.

The ultimate goal, as you might imagine, is integrating Stitcher’s content into Deezer’s existing platform through a free service called Talk. Goldman said they’ve been working on Talk for some time and the Stitcher acquisition will only accelerate those efforts.

Perhaps more importantly, however, is the fact that Stitcher already comes integrated into roughly 50 different vehicle models from the likes of BMW, Ford, General Motors, Jaguar and Mazda. Now that Stitcher is under Deezer’s ownership, Goldman is hoping it’ll help Deezer get its foot in the door with automakers.

Deezer only recently entered the US market but is an established provider overseas with more than 35 million tracks in its catalog.
