Dell can't ship Alienware PCs to certain US states due to newly adopted power consumption...

So instead, it takes 1000 cubic feet of natural gas to produce a single kWh.
But the thing is, oil is being phased out in all aspects of life. And to be honest, I'm not 100% happy about that. In fact, I'm not one who believes that Gasoline power will ever be phased out completely.

As a side note though, natural gas supply is estimated to be at 250 years +\-.
And as far as volume, natural gas can be compressed for storage and takes up far less space to store. Plus, it flows waaaay easier than a liquid, not to mention oil. So transporting it is a snap.

What are on about.
I don't disagree, I encourage clean energy like nuclear, solar... Etc, cleaner transportation, reasonable use of natural resources), but please don't be arrogant and pretend to be morally superior, you are not saving the planet, what we are doing is just a selfish desire to live in a favourable environment for humans.
Come on man, I said lesser educated "about the subject."
There are a lot of areas where I'm the less educated one. I just don't try to pass myself off as anything else.

what we are doing is just a selfish desire to live in a favourable environment for humans.
That is a bad thing? Seriously? Or am I just misreading your point?

If they are banning Computers over power consumption, what will they do to other electronics like Stoves, AC units. Dryers and CARS?

The CA Governor Gavin Newsom is facing a recall. Decisions in the state like these would ideally cause the recall to succeed. I am not optimistic, though, as it seems the voters here are unable to connect the consequences like this with the elected leaders. Wish I could leave, have to stay a few more years for job reasons.

Did anyone here actually read the new regulation? It has nothing to do with active power consumption, and everything to do with idle-state consumption of consumption during sleep mode (they're now limited to 5W + some extra for extra RAM), they require 90% or greater efficiency of their power supplies at 50% of their designed load capacity.

That it, that is the bit Alienware/Dell couldn't figure out: how to install a 90+ certified PSU. They'd rather not sell you a computer, than install half-way decent parts.

Honestly Techspot, you even linked to the section of the new law and completely left out what the text of it said? Like, come on. I would say I am surprised... but I'm not.

About friggin time. This madness needs to stop. Back in the day high end GPUs consumed around 40 watts, now we're at 350. Same goes to CPUs.
These new rules don't do anything to curb high power components in fact you can order high end computer from Alienware with no issues with the ITX computers with mid to entry level components being unavailable to ship.

OK, I didn't read the whole law,

That said, if this is an issue of standby current, all you really have to do, is kill the power to the surge suppressor and be done with it.

The imbeciles at our local power company put a commercial on TV, showing people that they should, "pull all the plugs from a power strip, to save energy". (REALLY). I guess nobody there was smart enough to figure out what the switch was for,.

As for the, "Energy Star" nonsense", while I guess it's viable in some capacity. Meeting those specs also f**ks up , say, an air conditioner, to the point where it won't even power up in the "cooling" (compressor running), mode..In the end, all an "Energy Star" rating amounts to, is a sales gimmick.

I get a kick out of the "energy saving modes" as well. With an air conditioner it only starts the machine when the temp gets above the set temperature around the machine. Which leaves you with the rest of the room hot, and a puddle of cooler air directly in the vicinity of the machine.

And then there's Intel's "miracle hibernate mode" (S-6), ignore a machine for a couple of days, and it won't wake up period, whether the PSU is "Haswell certified", or not.

Now they're trying to ban plastic bags at markets. Well, if people weren't so f**king lazy, they'd take them back to the stores for recycling, instead of letting them blow all over the streets or get into our rivers and oceans.

So, y'all can pump out all the "red state, blue state" bullsh!t you want, but the reality is, most people are filthy pigs, and actually do need protecting from themselves, just as responsible people need protecting from them.

If we voters only had crystal balls so we know what those we vote for are going to do in the future!
It's not a consequence when we didn't know about it in the first place.
But, thanks to the ex-President and his shenanigans, it will be quite a while for CA to vote in another Republican.

Interesting that Dell hates selling AMD systems so much that it would go political with this sh!t box. It's really funny too, because Intel systems are the ones that are more power hungry and create more heat because they haven't managed to leave 14nm on the desktop chips yet. Which brings back more that Dell just wants an excuse not to sell AMD systems.

Did you bother to look at the Dell site? It's not just AMD systems, it's Intel also.
So much for your "political" theory.

Ummm... political is what they're doing against the (blue) states. Still political. Their anti-AMD stance in general isn't political, it's just an excuse. If they were in favor of AMD, they'd actually build them decently.

What, did you just come out of a coma the day before yesterday?

California has had its own set of product safety rules for decades.

Try reading labels sometime. As near as I came determine, every product has, "something known to the state of California to cause cancer". I'm starting to wonder if California itself causes cancer, and they're just blaming it on any and every product they can think of.

They've had their own emission specs for decades as well.

Hell, I've seen big bore motorcycles made for sale in California, with mandatory catalytic converters.

I'm not living in the US, but the "stop GPU consumption" is ridiculous and it shows that the whole "green" movement is going nuts.
Electric cars are at this point nothing but rich boy toys. As for the rest of us, I'll never quit using Diesel as long as electric cars have a laughably low range and the number of battery cycles is by the hundreds, the batteries are made out of slave mined rare materials and almost impossible to recycle, despite the rhetoric that "electric cars are the next sliced bread"
Eastern Europe is honestly laughing at this measure. It's *****ic and useless on a large scale. But what do I know? I've been under communism just nine years...

The USA average household electricity consumption kWh per day is 28.9 kWh in Europe it's less than 10 kWh get a brain morans

Mine is about 40Kw a day but that includes running a pool pump and heater during the day and a rack full of home automation equipment as well as air conditioning.

My solar offsets some of it.

This implies that their Intel systems are actually decently built... At any rate democrats and pseudo-environmentalists in general are going to bury themselves with this kind of idiocy. It's almost as if they were saying that we need to stop using gaming PCs and buy a subscription for some kind of cloud gaming, as if it made a difference whether the stupidly energy-hungry system is in my home or somewhere else.

In my opinion, the supposed "eco friendly" power solutions are just wishful thinking. Solar panels and windmills don't just produce themselves out of the air. The energy that goes into producing and maintaining them is very high. They may generate electricity over a number of years, but they are not efficient in doing so. Then you have hydro electric, again the same problem persist. The power requirement to build and maintain these hydro electric plants are massive, not to mention the environmental impact of preventing water from flowing naturally. In addition, for countries that goes through the 4 seasons, when it hits winter time, all 3 solutions are going to run into some difficulties with energy production, which generally means falling back to natural resources like natural gas/ fossil fuel.

Technology like electric cars give people the impression that they are helping to save the earth, but are they really doing so? The electric needs to come from somewhere, and generally, you cannot avoid utilising fossil fuel to power it. In addition, the battery that will need replacing every couple of years or so also requires power to produce.

Sounds like something the EU would implement....

The EU already implemented a lot of measures:
- crazy high electricity prices, so that a standard family cannot pay it and have to have AC off, lights off as much as possible...

- the windmills etc are being completely paid by the user, so that electricity companies have record wins and the CEO is the best "manager" of the world

- politicians allow this because after the 4 years on the job, they become a place at those companies doing nothing and earning over 300.000€/ year

- on most EU- countries (which makes no sense... well it does, according to my previous points) if you have solar panels (which would be great), during the day (when you are not at home) you sell the energy to the network almost for free (electricity companies thank you and become more €€€) and at night you have to use and pay the high energy price from the network. So for most it doesn't worth it (or you buy batteries).

In sum: the world is more focused on making money (example, most companies in the EU close and thousand are fired because they produce in China - on the other side of the world, literally, and then those same products travel in ships that pollute more than the worse engine ever) than saving the planet so...

In my opinion, the supposed "eco friendly" power solutions are just wishful thinking.
Actually, it is happening thinking.
Solar panels and windmills don't just produce themselves out of the air. The energy that goes into producing and maintaining them is very high.
Please don't even consider comparing the manufacture of those with an entire fossil fuel power plant. Especially when you remember those power plants will be polluting heavily during their entire lifespan.
The power requirement to build and maintain these hydro electric plants are massive,
True, but maintenance is fractional next to a fossil fuel power plant.
Some would even call it a worthwhile investment.
for countries that goes through the 4 seasons, when it hits winter time, all 3 solutions are going to run into some difficulties with energy production
Or, the truth, they don't. Not with simple maintenance.
Technology like electric cars give people the impression that they are helping to save the earth, but are they really doing so?
Yes, they are. And even anti-eco people know that to be true, at least to a point. Less pollution = better for the atmosphere. It's not hard.
In addition, the battery that will need replacing every couple of years or so
When you consider that the batteries in 11 year old Ford Focus' and late 90s Hybrids are still functioning well to this day, I will say wrong. And look at the battery advancements since then.
