Desktop memory 4x4 vs 2x2 + 2x2

Okay, so my question is whether there is any difference between having two 2x2 dual channel memory versus one 4x4 dual channel memory. Both would end up with 8 gigs, while one uses 4 slots and the other only 2 slots. For instance, I have the G.Skill Ripjaw 2x2 memory installed, and I am looking at upgrading to 8 gigs. Would simply buying another set to fill in my two remaining memory slots be the same as swapping out the 2x2 for 4x4 memory? This is of course assuming I have 4 memory slots supporting dual channel memory, and all other memory variables are kept constant.

Since you already have 2x2GB you might as well go ahead and add another 2x2GB to get to 8GB.

Your question should have been written out as 2x4GB or 4x2GB. You currently have 2x2GB and the 4x4GB combination would equal a total of 16GB.

The question as to which combination is better, has been a question I have as well. I'm fairly confident though a performance difference would hardly be noticed.
