Simple. An airline isn't going to risk the lives of their passengers and their reputation ;). If the cellphone could crash a plane they would collect them at the door. So, do you shut yours down or just switch to vibrate?

I turn off the GSM broadcast and simply switch to 'airplane-safe' 3G.

But yeah really, it's not like the airplane is gonna plummet and skydive just because some dude/dudette has his/her cellphone left 'on.' But I've seen GSM broadcasting interference with analogue instruments, so I'll just stick to 'airplane mode' for now.

Not willing to risk my life for a little more connectivity that I probably don't want anyway. If the guy/gal in control of my life says turn off my phone then I do it.

Always do when flying, plus it provides a valid excuse for not having to answer the phone.
