Dreaded "Blue Screen" on startup

My son is having an issue with his Dell notebook. When it boots up, it starts to load Windows and then he gets the "Blue Screen". I wont be able to give any other details until he comes home this weekend. I was just wondering if there are any steps, or things I should look out for when I do finally get to see the PC? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
