My Computer is A windows XP Media Center Addition 3. I ran a full scan with updated MalwareBytes Anti Malware, nothing detected.

I am having a blue screen that pops up with this information:

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

The Technical Support Person told me that he thought the problem was with Mozilla Firefox, which I had installed earlier today. We uninstalled that, but the problem returned. Now he recommends that I factory Reset my Computer. Is there any alternative? Please reply soon!
 
Yes, there probably is an alternative but we need more information. First, that error is usually caused by drivers. What driver at this point we are not sure.

Prior to installing Firefox did you have any BSODs at all? When you updated your drivers what exactly did you update, i.e., FireFox, video card, etc.? Did the IT suggest trying a system retore point? Are you sure all drivers from FireFox are removed?

Since this is a BSOD issue the mods will more than likely move your thread to the proper BSOD sub-forum found in the Windows OS boards. Don't worry about posting another thread there; this one is fine.

Since it is 1:15 A.M. here on the East Coast I am going to bed, but at this moment you have no need to do a factory reset. Someone should be able to help you but since every one here is a volunteer it may take a little time; be patient and you'll get the help.
 
Well, I have had BSODs in the past, I had a problem prior to this, around May 11th. Dell's Technical Support had me factory reset my computer, and it was a pain in the ***** to reinstall all of the software. The only thing I did today was download Firefox, and put the "Ilimitux" add on on it. It ran fine, but later I get the BSOD.

Edit: I don't think I have had any BSODs since I factory reset my computer on May 11th. I am pretty sure Firefox is removed, The Technical Support guy went to add/Remove Programs and deleted it.
 
When I reported the "serious error", windows gave me this message:

Have you attempted to update McAfee and if so has it resolved your issues. There are better security issues than McAfee but if it does what you need it to do and you are being protected that is the main thing.
 
well, I have 3 security programs: Spybot S &D, Malwarebytes Anti Malware, and Mcafee Security Suite. When I check for updates, I get "critical update for spamkiller", but when I click "register now" nothing happens. Here is what I think is happening: I think that the 2005 trial version of Mcafee, which came with the computer is still on the computer somewhere. It doesn't recognize that I am not using it, and instead am using a recent McAfee product. Also, when McAfee update automatically, it always tells me that it is successful. I also got a different BSOD not to long ago:

First, more than one antivirus/security suit is going to cause system conflicts even if made by the same company. Any old drivers left behind will attempt to "work" even if the software itself has been uninstalled. I don't know a whole lot about McAfee but see if they have a Removal Tool for the 2005 version and use it.

Here is a primary rule concerning security software: For real time protection One antivirus, One firewall, One antimalware/spyware or One security suit.

You could use a registry cleaner such as RegCleaner that you can get for free from MajorGeeks.com But be very careful if you decide to use it because one must be very cautious when working in the registry.

If you do use it look for the Uninstall Menu tab and then look for those items pertaining only to McAfee 2005. Delete those items. Leave the rest alone!


As for the 0x8E error they are almost always caused by hardware and are particulaly strong indicators of corrupted memory (though sometimes they can be caused by drivers).

The McAfee 2005 does not show up on the add/ remove programs list. would you recommend uninstalling and reinstalling Mcafee security suite? I will download the RegCleaner, the tech guy downloaded RegCure, did a scan, found over 600 problems, but he then realized that you have to Register in order to remove them. He then just uninstalled RegCure, the whole process seemed unprofessional to me.
 
It is normal for uninstalled software not to show in the add/remove programs. RegCleaner will do you fine. You are correct about the unprofessional process of things like RegCure. Believe it or not many of these so-called software helps are nothing but malware in disguise.

I was helping someone a few months ago who knew nothing about PC security and they were infected with a malware that said they were infected with 25 viruses/trojans and they needed to download their program to remove the infections. I removed that and found only 5 infections.

before uninstalling your current McAfee see if RegCleaner finds any of your older McAfee.

My Computer > C Drive > Windows Folder > Minidump Folder > Minidump Files.

It is these files that we need (not the folder). Attach to your next post the five most recent dumps. Notice the Manage Attachments button at the bottom when you go to post the next time. You can Zip up to five files per Zip. Please do us a favor and don’t Zip each one individually.
 
Okay, all errors were 0xD1 and these are usually caused by faulty drivers. The first four simply cited Unknown_Module (ANALYSIS INCONCLUSIVE) which isn't any help at all.

However, the fifth dump specifically cited the McAfee driver mfehidk.sys as your problem and this is a Host Intrusion Detection (HIPS) Link Driver and belongs to the firewall.

* It seems your issue is with McAfee. My concern is there is the possibility your system may be infected. Go online and search for ESET's NOD32 Online virus scan, let it install their Direct X (compeltely safe to do so) and then scan.

* You could also try and uninstall and reinstall McAfee after you scan with NOD32 and see if that helps.

* There are better security solutions if you are interested.
 
ok, I got the same error twice more, this time when I reported the problem to Windows it said the report was corrupted. I am downloading ESET online scanner now.
 
All right. I ran the scan. It got roughly 99.75 % complete before the dreaded BSOD came up. It did Not detect any problems. Should I uninstall and reinstall McAfee?
 
Yes, uninstall and then reinstall. But before doing so attach the latest minidumps from the BSODs that occured when scanning since it is only one or two you don't need to Zip them, just attach them.
 
First, yes go ahead and delete the registry info. posts.

Second, both dump errors are again 0xD1 and one is Unknown_Module but the second one cited the same McAfee mfehidk.sys driver as your problem. The Default_Bucket_ID stated Code Corruption.

* I would say it is safe to say that your McAfee needs help. Go ahead and uninstall and reinstall and then see if you can update. I am going to bed! :)
