DVD-Rom reading problems

Hi

I recently got Flight Simulator X on PC-DVD-Rom. I have a TEAC DVD+RW DV-W58E. This should give me a DVD-Rom read speed of x12. When I put the DVD in the drive it tries to read the data and then after a short while gives up. Any ideas how I can get my drive to recognise the DVD? I have tried holding Left Shift when I inset the DVD (has worked on other games) but still no luck

Just to say, the drive is working fine with other DVD-Rom games. Please help, I am tearing my hair out here, lol
