EarthBound fans, rejoice! Multiple sources are reporting that Nintendo is finally planning on bringing the game's sequel, Mother 3, to the Western world. The game originally launched in Japan on April 20, 2006. Better late than never, right?

Eurogamer corroborated various reports from Reddit and Twitter, adding that Nintendo is aiming to release Mother 3 on the Wii U's Virtual Console to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

For those unfamiliar, the original EarthBound arrived on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in North America in June 1995. The game was called Mother 2 in Japan when it launched a year earlier. The original Mother game dropped in 1989 for the Nintendo Famicom and was released for the first time outside of Japan last year as EarthBound Beginnings for the Wii U.

A few years back, a group of dedicated fans offered to allow Nintendo to use their translated text files for Mother 3 if it would at all help / encourage the company to localize the game outside of its home country.

Despite its age, EarthBound is still highly regarded among critics as one of the best role-playing games of all-time. The game (cartridge-only) regularly fetches over a hundred bucks on eBay. What's more, it's not uncommon to see buyers pay several times that amount for the game with its original retail box.

Rightly so.
