Explain a workgroup switch Vs router please

I have a 10/100 Linksys 5 port workgroup switch that someone gave me. I want to split the feed off of my cable modem so both the kids can have the net. Will this work or do I need a router?

Nope you need a router.

Cable modem > Router >Hub (switch) > PC's....
