Fried Speakers?

My desk computer has an internal speaker and I also have 2 others hooked up. In spite of my surge protector, they appear to have been fried. Can I hook up new speakers or do you think my sound card is damaged? Please bear in mind that I am a great-grandma and not particularly knowledgeable.

I have lost sound for many different reasons - most likely are:
- amplifier is 'off' (confirm plugged in and 'on')
- 'mute' is enabled (check 'mute' is off and that volume is set to mid-range)
- driver problem (enter 'Device Manager' in 'System' and confirm that there are no warning flags, ie yellow triangles)
- change due to Microsoft Update, see https://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000208.htm

It would be extremely rare that a PC would produce enough volume power to burnout speakers - - so look for other causes as noted above.
