What just happened? Jensen Huang has received the National Medal of Science for turning the GPU from a graphics chip into a computing platform used in AI and scientific research. President Donald Trump presented the award to Nvidia's founder and CEO at a technology summit at the US Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C.

AMD CEO Lisa Su, Google co-founder Sergey Brin and Elon Musk also received the National Medal of Science at the event. Dell founder Michael Dell and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, a separate federal honor.

Huang's citation highlighted massively parallel computation and the breakthroughs it made possible. The recognition reflects a change in how GPUs are used: hardware originally developed to put images on a screen became an architecture for general-purpose computing, extending its reach into AI and scientific workloads.

Under Huang, Nvidia developed the technology beyond its gaming origins. That shift gave researchers a computing platform suited to work beyond graphics and helped advance AI and scientific computation.

Massively parallel computation is the link between those uses. The citation credits Huang's contributions to massively parallel computing with enabling significant breakthroughs. The award recognizes both the underlying computing architecture and the applications it enabled.

The other recipients represent several parts of the technology industry that supplies AI computing systems. Nvidia and AMD develop chips, while Google, Microsoft and Dell span cloud services and computer hardware.

The summit also included investment announcements from industry leaders. Eleven technology companies pledged a combined $2.4 billion in AI tools and computing credits to support the government's Genesis Mission, an initiative aimed at accelerating scientific discoveries through AI. Nvidia made the largest commitment, pledging $1 billion over five years to support scientific research.

The National Medal of Science is the US government's highest scientific honor, awarded since 1963. For Huang, it follows the IEEE Medal of Honor, which he received in 2026, and the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, which he shared with Nvidia chief scientist Bill Dally in 2025.

This is government manipulation pure and simple.
Nancy Pelosi rushed her money over to Nvidia - under threat of the Chinese air force.
Then Trump forces Nvidia not to sell to China while claiming he'll impose tariffs.
Stock sells out immediately and is slow to be replaced. Governments pouring money into "AI" related infrastructure driving up the costs of GPU and then memory and consequentially storage.

This is all a vain attempt by America to try and stay ahead of China on technology and it's already failed.

Someone needs to call them all out.

"science"
Might as well be a participation trophy. They're probably the only people who will have "made" money during this nonsense. It took almost 7 years for the economy to completely recover after the 2008 financial crash, can we just rip this bandaid off and get this over with?

Um, and this is the guy that stated, 'it just works" dozens of times without actual explanation of the technology in a recent keynote? Pffft. He will go down in history (if the world is still here in 10 years) as the perpetrator of societies end, and he did it for money and, a, fame?

I mean I'm all for calling out congress for stock trading, but if we are going to call them out, we should do it right.

Nancy Pelosi (I know she's an easy target, but it isn't just her in congress that has money invested into Nvidia). Alan Armstrong, Angus King, Bruce Westerman, Cleo Fields, Cory Booker, Dan Newhouse, Daniel Meuser, Dwight Evans, Eric Swalwell, Gilbert Cisneros, Jefferson Shreve, John Boozman, John McGuire, Josh Gottheimer, Julia Letlow, Jared Moskowitz, Katie Britt, Keith Self, Lisa McClain, Markwayne Mullin, Matt Van Epps, Michael McCaul, Michael Rulli, Nancy Pelosi, Ritchie Torres, Rob Bresnahan, Ro Khanna, Sam Liccardo, Sheldon Whitehouse. All of these members of congress have shares in Nvidia. And as of 2026, those who are still in congress (exlcuding a few from this list) have 11.6 MILLION dollars combined invested into Nvidia.

I'm with you, but the reality is: it's the entire congress and the executive branch.

The clown is a Sales Rep. What science has he ever done in his life.
For real! Not to mention that it's really more of a right product at the right time kind of situation where GPUs just happen to be better at this than CPUs, etc. If it were the other way around maybe we'd all be complaining about a different CEO receiving this award instead of their employed engineers.
