Gaming community casts doubt on Elon Musk's Path of Exile 2 achievements

A hot potato: Tech billionaire Elon Musk's recent foray into the world of hardcore gaming has raised eyebrows within the Path of Exile 2 (PoE 2) community. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO, who previously boasted about his high rankings in games like Diablo 4, streamed an hour and a half of gameplay on January 7, showcasing his level 95 hardcore character, a feat that typically requires immense skill and game knowledge. However, his playing was riddled with inconsistencies and basic errors.

The stream began to raise eyebrows just 18 minutes in when Musk accessed his character's stash. A tab labeled "Elon's map" stood out conspicuously, as other tabs lacked similar personalized names. This oddity sparked speculation that someone else might have curated the tab's contents to facilitate easier gameplay, allowing Musk to display his high-level character without risking its demise.

As the stream progressed, Musk's gameplay continued to falter. His character's movement appeared erratic and his clearspeed was notably slow for a player of his supposed caliber. In one glaring instance, Musk allowed his character's mana meter to remain empty for a full 10 seconds, causing a significant drop in damage output -- a rookie mistake for someone claiming top-tier status.

Further inconsistencies emerged in Musk's item management. He inexplicably left valuable currency items like Chaos Orbs and Exalted Orbs uncollected on the ground, while picking up low-tier keystones that would be useless for a character at his level of progression.

Musk's navigation of the game's Atlas map system also raised questions. He appeared to struggle with identifying which nodes he could run, despite his character having theoretically cleared hundreds, if not thousands, of maps to reach its current level and gear status. At one point, when selecting a map to clear, Musk's commentary was limited to noting, "There are four things here," when referring to the map's modifiers -- a simplistic observation for a supposedly experienced player.

The stream also revealed that Musk was playing without an active loot filter, a standard tool used by high-level players to efficiently manage item drops. Instead, he was seen manually clicking and dragging items into his inventory, a tedious process that would have required sorting through thousands of dropped items to assemble his character's equipment.

Perhaps the most damning evidence of Musk's questionable expertise came when he reviewed his character's equipment. Inspecting his weapon, Musk commented that it was "only level 62" compared to his level 95 character, demonstrating a fundamental misunderstanding of Path of Exile 2's itemization system. In the game, an item's effectiveness is determined by its item level, not its level requirement - a basic concept that any high-ranking player would undoubtedly understand.

Musk repeated this mistake as he examined each piece of his character's gear, stating, "My equipment's pretty low level compared to my character level, but it seems to work pretty well." This comment was particularly jarring given that his character was equipped with high-end gear that had been meticulously collected, crafted, and optimized for his build.

Redditors got right to the point. Streamer Quin69 stated, "One hundred percent someone plays an account for him," while Asmongold added, "There's no way he played that account. I'm sorry, but somebody played it for him, one hundred f***ing percent."

User InvestmentFew9366 commented, "His gear is better than a lot of full time streamers. No way it is real. Account sharing or boost of some kind." Another Redditor, frenchpatato, pointed out, "I mean he has a f'in mirror tier staff and says he needs to replace it because it's only level 62. You don't need to say anything else."

The incident has sparked a broader discussion about the motivations behind Musk's gaming claims. As Redditor Elbjornbjorn noted, "The weird part to me is that he feels he needs to brag about being a pro gamer for some reason. Dude put a car his company designed into space on a rocket his other company designed, why the hell does he need to brag about gaming?"

This.

I get paying someone to not need to grid levels to enjoy a game, but bragging your fake skills is weird.

You won at money, work, entrepreneurship, innovation, and lately politics - let the kids have video games.

Is there even the tiniest chance someone to claim something about a game, without 'authorities' named like InvestmentFew9366 or Elbjornbjorn immediately disproving it because it just doesn't feel right to them?

Sounds like smne who hates Musk (& Trump ofc) is trying to defame him and gain some clicks for their fail channel/stream.

No one is "defaming him" they are just calling him a liar for lying. For a guy who expects his employess to work all day and weekends and says he does the same thing, how would you possibly have time to play that much? If he streamed himself playing the game for the first time and having no idea what he was doing would have endear himself much better than bragging about a game where he didn't any of the work he's claiming he did.

With the money he has, he should be producing kids with women of his calibre and standing.
With the money he has, he should be outsourcing his work duties so that he can properly father the kids he's producing. He should be proudly showing off kids who are experts in this game and also winning engineering and science competitions at the same time, while they have fun-filled holidays in all 4 seasons of the year. This would even placate the eugenicists, as clearly Elon is of superior genetic stock and can afford to support a brood of over 15+. If John Wesley's mum could do it, why can't he?

Sorry, I'm not sure if my post is sarcastic..

This. There is literally no way Elon has the time. Even if he didn't sleep.

Elon shows signs of being bullied as a child. I have a few other "celebs" that I feel the same, but let's focus on Mr. Cringe Lord. His traits and behavior align closely with those of Trump, which likely explains why he gravitates toward right-wing conspiracy theories, and why Trump seems to have taken a liking to him. When cornered, he often tries to maneuver his way out, sometimes in ways that come across as cringeworthy. Some examples I can think of...

- He was booed while on stage with comedian Dave Chappelle. In response, he yelled, "I'm rich!" before walking off.

- "Go F--- Yourself" that Musk told critics of his platform

- Naming His Child X AE A-12

- Lawsuit over "pedo guy" remark - Need I say more.

- Doge meme obsession - Dogecoin - No wonder crypto scams use your name mister.

And finally, what happened to the fight with Mark Zuckerberg? Mommy saved him. Literally.

Disclaimer: My own opinion.

Who cares? Any post or comment about this is just giving him what he wants (I actually like the guy, but seriously, who cares what rich famous people do with their free time, move on).

After playing Elden Ring for two years and defeating every single boss in the game, thrice, I'm still having nightmares about his fat char build.

Wow, really? You obviously know nothing about this particular game, but your reaction is to immediately come to Musk's defense simply because someone posted something negative about him. There's absolutely ZERO chance he actually built that game character himself. PERIOD. You can flail and moan about it all you want, but the guy is a liar/cheater.

Look, Billionaires are weird. They just are.

The rest of us plebs need other people. We have to socialize, we exist on par with other members of society. We have to be nice, cause who knows when we're going to need to lean on someone else. We have to help others, cause who knows when we're going to need help ourselves.

Billionaires are alone. There are like 3000 billionaires in a world of 8 billion people. They all don't really *need* other people like we need them. They can pay for literally anything and get it. They have to wonder if every single one of their personal relationships is about them or if its about their money.

And that's going to really eff some of these guys up, who biologically need the same stuff the rest of us do, but psychologically will never really be able to get it.

This isn't a "cut the guy some slack" post. Rip on him all you want. Just recognize that part of the reason these guys are so damn weird is because they're not really even fully human anymore, they don't really live human lives. Some parts of their humanity are so starved/neglected that they've sort of become something else entirely.

Give him a break people.

Elon did a lot of stuff, many people work etc and go to games to get the steam off. He’s a human being just like us.

Is gaming in such a state that we need literally everyone to be one even if they are really really bad at them?

I don't get it.

Elon is a great man and it speaks volumes about everyone that tears him down because of whatever reason you choose today.

get a grip, he's an interesting character , seems deeply flawed, but then nearly everyone who pushes themselves to extremes are.
Why would a balanced person want to become the POTUS and Billionaire you give up too much for things you don't value ie do you think say Elon is truly happy ? I don't, but I think he doesn't care about that, like drama queens, or women who need to be passionately in love. He probably is motivated by being a powerful player despite his well being

Love him or hate him that he chooses to live his life publically with all his greatness or foibles is an eye opener

I mean what do we make of Woody Allen or Picasso are they great people or also deeply flawed - particularly Picasso

Again what's interesting is our response.
Ie some people can separate a persons deeds and characters , others can't,. Eg doesn't matter we dislike him/her they are the "best" for the job at hand
Plus are we consistent in our comments if we don't personally agreed with said individual

Ok so a guy probably paid someone to boost an account for him...who really cares? He's not claming to be a god gamer or something, he's claiming to be a gamer. Gamers can buy boosted accounts and considering his line of work would it not make sense to not want to dump hundreds or thousands of hours into a game in order to see the endgame and have fun at the max level?

Give it a rest people. Find something constructive to care about. This is a video game.

I don't think the comments here are being driven by actual "care"; some topics are just FUN to speculate about. And yes, his actions show he IS claiming to be a god gamer.

This article definitely makes it look like Elon has had a lot of help... with one exception: the tab named "Elon's map". It, too, seems fishy - but narcissists often refer to themselves in the third person, so who knows? He may have actually named that himself!
