Last October, Globalfoundries and ARM announced they would partner to let mutual customers develop mobile processors using ARM's technologies and Globalfoundries' 28nm fabrication process. The companies revealed more about their collaboration this week at Mobile World Congress, detailing an upcoming system-on-a-chip (SoC) platform.
As you might expect, the chip is based on ARM's Cortex-A9 processor and Globalfoundries' 28nm manufacturing tech, and will be aimed at smartphones, tablets, smartbooks, and other mobile devices. By using 28nm technology, it's said the platform offers up to 40% more performance with 30% less power consumption, giving systems a 100% boost in battery life over existing 45nm products.
Globalfoundries plans to start producing the new SoC sometime during the second half of this year, and there's no word on when it will appear in mainstream devices or what companies might use it.
