Gmail for Android finally unifies your inbox

An update to the Gmail app for Android has finally brought together all the emails from your various accounts into the one inbox, making it a lot easier to view and manage your messages. The feature is available as a self-explanatory "All Inboxes" option accessible through the Gmail side panel.

Previously, users who had more than one email account linked to the Gmail app had to switch between inboxes to see emails from each account. While it will still be possible to sort emails by account in the Gmail app, the All Inboxes option gives you a much better overview of your email account inboxes on the one screen.

Google has also implemented email conversations for accounts other than Gmail. This means that if you've linked an, Yahoo or other IMAP/POP email account, you'll see emails and subsequent replies stacked as one conversation, exactly like you get with your Gmail emails.

The update also brings smarter and better auto-complete, which is said to make searching for emails much faster, alongside a number of other minor tweaks.

Android users should see the updated Gmail app hit your devices shortly, assuming you've got auto-update enabled. The improvements aren't quite ready for users of the iOS Gmail app, though we'd expect that it will eventually be updated with the same features as the Android version.

So I can dump the Inbox app from them?

So when do we get these updates to the Inbox app? Or was that app just a gimick.

I dumped Inbox by Gmail from my mobile long ago, I find the Gmail app much better but I kept it on my desktop where I find it better than Gmail. I guess the decision is ours.

I like the separation it gives me as I have some accounts via Inbox and others via Gmail app. Easier to ignore notifications which would all be flagged with identical icons if I just used Gmail app for all. Probably just dump Inbox now as have enough superfluous apps as it is especially given that I need to have the Outlook app installed just to have an "Account" listed in Android to import to Gmail.

Hmm; allowing the email preview is an invitation to virus'. By accessing the content, even just for a preview, any virus payload is launched and you never know or see that happen.
Personally, I disdain the preview feature and filter the inbox to dump unsolicited email and scan for such payloads FIRST.

Been able to do this on Blackberry 10 since it launched (aside from preview, which I agree is a scary notion) ... good to see other mobile OS's catching up ;)
