Google Earth on my iPad

I've enjoyed our efforts on this one. Persistence has usually paid off for me. There's only one problem that is still annoying me with an app but maybe Support will clear it up. I love the parachute of that round button on the bezel. Anytime you get lost you can press it and it takes you back to the Start screen showing all the apps.

I'm not clear from your last post whether or not we now have Google Earth running successfully on your iPad 2. Hopefully you have replaced your Google Earth app with the latest one and are running iOS8. If it still won't run properly the only other idea I have at present is to reset the iPad back to factory condition and go through the process of updating everything.

I like the way you have incorporated a screenshot. That's impressive and one up on me.

As I told you, I did uninstall/reinstall the Google Earth app. Everything on my iPad is the latest version. When I got this used iPad, I started from scratch basically by using the restore
process. At this point I won't be resetting the iPad.

In other words Google Earth still doesn't work for you? :'( If we didn't succeed I agree it's not worth restoring the iPad to as it was when first purchased. Setting the iPad up in the first place was quite a long process. There are probably other apps in the app Store that you could use instead of Google Earth.

iOS 8.1 was released on December 9th 2014 and was said to increase performance on the iPad 2 and remove some bugs. Was it easy to do the update because I've not yet had to do one?

I mainly have & use Google Earth because it has streetview . I haven't found anything else like it. Not even google maps has it because I just checked :(
I do thank you for your patience, I think Google needs to fix it. I don't believe its me, I think its google.

I reckon that there are no problems with either your iPad 2 or the Google Earth app. When the error message is coming up it doesn't refer to the storage space on the iPad but to the ram being used. That can't be increased as on a computer but you can shut down all background apps to stop them hogging memory and slowing things down. I've found an excellent explanation of this and how to shut them down.

When I tried this on my iPad I couldn't believe how much stuff was running in the background. I spent a couple of minutes shutting the apps down by running my finger up to the top of the screen as described. If you do this and then open Google Earth it may have sufficient available memory to work properly.

Yes, I think I mentioned that originally. I shut down all my apps & clear the History in Safari multiple times a day & am basically getting tired of shutting down my iPad everytime I want to use Google Earth.
Before I started this thread I had been googling for solutions but none worked so that is why I came in here.
I personally believe its google fault. GE works flawless on my iPhone4 & always has but the screen is so tiny. So if anybody has ideas not mentioned in here, let me know :) Thank you @bazz2004 , will check out the link(s) later :)

Try what is suggested in that second link and you will see that closing and clearing Safari, as you have already done, is doing very little in terms of increasing resources. I found the article to be very instructive. You are barely scratching the surface in terms of releasing memory. I must have closed about 20 screens so imagine what that will do for your iPad 2's ability to run Google Earth. I don't think there is anything else that you can do apart from this method of releasing the maximum amount of ram or buying a new iPad, but I will be very pleased if you can prove me wrong.

Ok, the only "new" part to me was turning off app refresh which I did do & then jumped on GE & went all over the place till the low memory finally popped up BUT much later than before.
For now I'm going to be happy with it as is. I'll look around a bit more but thank you again for your persistent patience with me :)

Well I think we've established that it's related to the available ram. On a PC we could easily find out how much ram was installed either by looking or running a utility. Task Manager would tell us how much was being taken up by various running processes. It's a simple upgrade to add more. The iPad is totally different and Apple are pretty secretive about how much is included in different models. They concentrate on the size of the hard drive storage, 16gb, 32Gb, 64Gb etc.

What we could do with is for someone with the iPad 2 to install the current version of Google Earth and let us know how it runs together with the version of iOS that they have. I do have someone in the family with your model of iPad but they are very busy. I'll ask them to give it a go when they have time and get back to you. Google Earth may be a challenge to get running on earlier iPads but we need input from others to be sure.

After the Seahawks game, I will be removing a couple hundred pics to my pc but I'm doubting it'll matter. Your idea sounds good & thanks.

The photos aren't stored in ram so I doubt there'll be any change. What I am doing now when I use the iPad first thing is to double tap the round Home button then swipe up the open pages to close them and release as much ram as possible. It seems good housekeeping and can do no harm.

I should be able to let you know how Google Earth behaves on that other iPad 2 later in the week. Enjoy the match.

Ever since I was told about the swiping up, I too do that everytime I use it. Will look forward to your findings. The Seahawks game will be a good one, looking forward to it too :) #GoSeahawks :)

I did ask twice about testing the app on the iPad 2 but he hasn't got back to me. What I did find out though is the amount of ram installed on various generations.

iPad 1 256Mb
iPad 2 512Mb
iPad 3. 1Gb
iPad 4. 1Gb
iPad Air 1Gb
iPad Air 2 2Gb

Google Earth may also remember previous sessions that you've done so clearing the memory cache within the app may help too.

I don't suppose you've tried getting in touch with your friend since :) "I did ask twice about testing the app on the iPad 2 but he hasn't got back to me. ".
