GPU overheating - Windows 7

Hi. I actually tried to get help in another forum, but they couldn't help me. I thought maybe I should try here.

So until a few days ago I was using Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit. Because I didnt format my computer since I bought it (almost 2 years ago) I've decided to do so now and install Windows 7 along the way. Ever since I did so I had nothing but problems. At first, my PCI sound card was incompatible. I saw many other people are experiencing this issue and as there was no solution, I bought a new USB based sound card. Now, when I started playing actual games, I noticed the next issue which is why I started this thread.

I noticed an overheat when my game crashed. I downloaded EVGA Precision and put my fans on 70% (2600 RPM). I looked at my GPU temperature, it was 60C on desktop when not running anything. That's 10C more than I had with Vista. I tested the crash on two games (Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood and Dead Space). The conclusion was that my GPU reaches 80-81C and crashes. It would crash at that temperature with Vista as well, but in Vista it was 70-74C when playing games so there was no problem. This is +10C I can't get rid of. When I put my fans on 100% it does reduce desktop temperature to 54, but games still reach 80C eventually and crash. Besides, I would never keep my fans on 100% as the sound it makes is unbearable. I also don't want them to break or catch a lot of dust too fast. They worked fine with Vista so they shouldn't be a problem.

I tried:
Updating drivers.
Rolling back to older drivers.
Cleaning dust.
Scanning for viruses.
Disabling file sharing network

What the hell? Windows 7 should fix problems like that, not cuase them. I already spent 30$ on a new sound card and I really don't feel like rolling back to Vista.

80C during gaming on the nVidia 8800 Series is ok. It should not be causing any crashes. My XFX 9800 GT used to have pretty much similar temps to yours when I ran XP.

What about CPU temps?

The CPU temp is okay I think. Wether I'm playing a video games or staying idle the temp of each core is somewhere between 45-55C. Sometimes one of them may raise to 60, nothing extreme I suppose.

The computer still crashes when it reaches about 80-81C GPU. Highest I encountered was 83 with no crash. I know that some people play with 80-95C GPU with no problem so I always found it odd that mine crashes at 80's regardless of the OS. The point is that something changed when I formatted and install Windows 7, and the heat went up.

Anyway... all I want is to play games with no crashes and without damaging any of my PC parts. Do you have any more suggestions? I heard I can do something in the BIOS but I'm afraid to play around with things I don't know about.
 
45-55C idle (for each core) is a bit too high.

Doenload HWMonitor and report the TMPIN0 value that it shows.

Those core temperatures are way too high for idle. They'll be soaring during gaming. I have a feeling that your thermal paste on your heat sink has dried up.

I suggest you take off the HSF carefully. Then clean the remnant TIM from the CPU ans HSF. Ensure that nothing drips onto the mobo while cleaning. Apply TIM afresh and put the HSF back in place. Read up a little online on how exactly to go about it. You must be very cautious.

If temperatures still don't improve look to get a better heat sink and fan for the CPU. The games are probably crashing due to high CPU temps.

Please post the TMPIN0 value that you see in HWMonitor once please.
