What just happened? The question of how much Grand Theft Auto VI would cost has finally been answered. The base game will be priced at $79.99, while an Ultimate Edition, which offers a slew of extras, will be available for $100.

Rockstar Games confirmed the prices ahead of preorders starting at midnight tonight. The studio also revealed that the game will be a "single-player experience" at launch, so it seems there won't be any new version of GTA Online when the next installment arrives on November 19.

There had been plenty of speculation that GTA VI would be the most expensive title of all time, priced at $100 or more for the base game. While $80 is a lot, Nintendo got there first with the Switch 2 launch title Mario Kart World.

However, the Ultimate Edition of GTA VI does cost $100. Rockstar appears to have gone all out in trying to convince people to opt for this edition, as it's packed with in-game extras including unique vehicles, his and hers revolvers, and more. There are also exclusive stores such as car mod shops, a hair salon, a clothing outlet, and a tattoo parlor.

Those who preorder either edition of the game will also receive the Vintage Vice City Pack downloadable content (DLC). This includes a '55 Vapid Stanier, '80s-era outfits and hair, the ability to add tropical patterns to most guns, and a garage on Ocean Beach.

Although an $80 base game is obviously better than $100, it's a worrying sign for the industry. A game as high-profile as GTA VI making this price tag the standard will likely embolden others to do the same.

Last year, one analyst said he expected an $80 to $100 GTA VI would "re-establish packaged video game prices after decades of deflation despite rampant cost growth."

Microsoft received so much backlash when it decided to make $80 the standard price for first-party Xbox games in 2025 that it soon reversed its decision, dropping The Outer Worlds 2 by $10.

The "physical" version of GTA VI will be released early on November 12 for preloading, though that name is a bit of a misnomer as it contains only "a download code inside the box" rather than a disc – something that's becoming increasingly common. There's still no word on a PC version, either.

For the size that this game obviously will be, $80 will be a steal. I mean it's been in dev for over 12 years as well, and we all know Rockstar knows how to deliver on a game, so I will happily shell out $80 now, and then another $160 later once it releases on PC and the eventual PS6. I mean, hell, I quadruple dipped on GTA5 on PS3, PS4, PS5 and PC, and have zero regrets.

... assuming it'll be a self-contained, completed game, yes.

Even if that claim were true, other studios certainly wouldn't hesitate to charge a premium price for games with budgets and quality levels far below those of GTA 6.

RDR2 has been $100 for the Ultimate and $80 for the regular version for ages at this point.

No surprise GTA6 would do the same.

Have to charge what the market will bear, frankly they could have probably gone to $120/$100 or even higher and still sold gangbusters on hype alone.

People seem to forget that GTA5 was supposed to have multiple story expansions but GTA Online turned out to be so profitable that they didn't release any. Now, I definitely got my money out of GTA5 either way, but I wont forget that when It comes to buying GTA6. I paid full price for 5, I wont make the same mistake for 6

Well, if this ends up being the case, I won't be pre-ordering or buying for the console then, I'll wait to get it on a sale on PC in many years to come, assuming it's any good.

Well done Rockstar, you successfully stopped me from paying full price...

Edit: Just to confirm, they 100% will not have a disc in the physical version, just a download code, and no plans on releasing one down the line, so this is a definite "wait for a sale on PC" game for me now, assuming it's even worth playing.

I always buy the full version so I don't get jerked around for gimmicks and features. But keep in mind: this game is a download. You better have like 500GB of storage space.

Those poll questions seem contradictory. Something *can* have been worked on long enough to justify the higher price *without* causing the rest of the industry to raise their prices.

Any company that thinks they can follow Rockstar's lead is going to have a really hard time with the comparisons between GTA6 and their own game.

GTA 6 will still sell well at that price. Very few games would at that price however. People complained (rightfully so) about the transition from $60 to $70, but it's true that games have become way more expensive to make and an increase was "necessary" from the developer/publisher side.

With *everything* getting more expensive in recent years however, people are having to tighten their wallets. I suspect this move will make other publishers try and start charging $80 as the minimum for the standard editions, but I don't think it will end well for them.

Nintendo tried it with Mario Kart World, and that remains their only first party game at that price (excluding recent physical carts that have a $10 upcharge over the digital version due to the DRAM chip pricing nightmare). Maybe they'll try it again with the OoT remake, but I think them seeing the sales data on MKW with it not being bundled with a console at a discount told them that it isn't worth selling less copies at a slightly higher price.

The story is gonna be mid, calling it now. V was worse then IV, and Rockstar has already stated they were going to tone down the dialog to be less "offensive". And the company isnt going to make any single player content either, so once you do the story, you're done, and that will take a week at most.

The multiplayer is going to be the worst of MMOs combined into a sweaty credit card swiping simulator.

This is the first GTA game I'm going to hard pass on. If its goo enough (it wont be) I'll pick it up on sale 10 years later for $10 like I did RDR2.

It wasnt necessary, these same companies jacking up prices also had record revenue in previous quarters.

Do you think nintendo, who made billions in profit off mario kart 8 alone, needed to increase prices to keep the lights on?

No it absolutely wouldn't be necessary if games were kept with a sane scope instead of every project needing to be a mega hit blockbuster that they spend the better part of a decade working on, which is why I put necessary in air quotes. I maintain there was nothing wrong with games being linear 10-20 hour games you could play once and then dump some more time into a tacked on multiplayer mode like in 6th/7th gen.

Mario Kart World also absolutely is the worst case of a game being higher than $60 I've seen yet. I got it in the console bundle for $50 and I'm not even sure I've gotten enough playtime out of it to justify that much.

Rockstar can charge as much as they want as far as I'm concerned, I'll just play the ultimate edition for free once it comes out for PC and I can pirate it. Perfect timing too, with Denuvo just being made completely useless in the last couple months.

Of course, by "play" I mean I'll just download it to see what the environment/sandbox is like, drive around a bit, and then delete it. I'm not actually going to waste my time "playing" Rockstar games, with their atrocious missions that are extremely, unbearably railroaded and treat me like a toddler. I'm baffled as to why anyone would pay $80/$100 for that experience.

The problem is not so much that GTA VI, a game with years and years of development, costs $80 but that EA, Ubisoft, Activision and the like will think that that their next yearly regurgitated release of COD 7 Black Ops 42 Cold War deserves the same price.

Weird poll, I agree with both choices.

Yes for this particular game $80 seems reasonable at launch.
And no, $80 should not become the new norm.

When you're the biggest game around and people expect a certain level of quality (and you live up to that quality) then it makes sense to charge a bit more.
If you're say Ubisoft and make slop and think "if they can charge $80, so can I" then enjoy your poor sales.

I'm a cheapskate though and not that interested in GTA anymore so definitely not spending $80 on it but it seems logical for the fans to do so.

I need thee PC version. The consoles are trash.

I'm not sure how anyone can enjoy playing on a console. The thumb controls are so fiddly to use compared to a keyboard and mouse, which is far superior for aiming and accuracy. Imagine trying to play starcraft 2 on a controller, lol.

I had a Playstation for singstar and bought GTA5 for it but barely played it cause of the controls. My roommate stole the GTA5 game and I didn't even care. Didn't even ask him for it back, lol. It's a little boring compared to something like path of exile 1 anyway - maybe it's made for kids

Agree with your comments about the poll.
