Harvard student was denied entry in the US over friends' social media activity

If you are a foreigner coming INTO this country, YOU are not a citizen OF this country and are NOT afforded the rights guaranteed to Americans (even though the government sometimes tramples on those here as well). Coming INTO this nation, they want to search, let em search. Don't like it, don't come here.
Same as the southern border. Come through legally, I have no problem. Come through ILLEGALLY, ship em back!

From the article:
Why it matters: As the number of travelers who are denied entry in the US by Border Patrol gets higher, it's important to take a look at the reasons why that can happen for you, even if you're a US citizen.
I fail to see why known US citizens do not seem to understand the words
that can happen for you, even if you're a US citizen

This is why you don't disclose your social media, or better yet, use it at all.

Held accountable for your acquaintance's social media actions. Good lord.....this is the policy of authoritarian dictatorships not one becoming of such a large old democracy.

Let's be precise here when the impact of such a decision can be so great: Most of these connections are merely acquaintances by definition and not 'friends', such are social media labels.
So what if they are on social media? You still chose to associate with people that have very negative views about our country. How are we supposed to know you dont share those views? Oh, you SAY you dont? Yeah, that proves it. I'm sure that a suicide bomber trying to get into the country wouldnt admit they were coming here to blow themselves up. If you are a friend with someone that goes on TV and announces they want to murder all the homos, you will be suspect for being friends with someone that has such political opinions. This is what happens when "everything is political" and someone's political leanings are used as an excuse to label them any number of undesirable names and unperson them from society.

When you come from a part of the world that seems to love breeding violent religious extremists, this kind of thing is what happens. If you are just mere acquaintances with them, then UNFRIEND them before trying to get into the very country they dislike so much. Again, most of us are taught at a young age that you shouldnt associate with people that will make you look bad by acquaintance, like drug dealers and criminals. This still applies if you are a precious PoC coming from a foreign country.

How long before they start applying this justification INSIDE the usa . And do "they" run honey-pot sites and harvest the IP's and emails and other data? Netanyaho ok , Rouhani Bad ??

Why does this seem like such a surprise to so many snowflakes? This is also what happens at every other border entry point at every other country on the planet.
I travel quite a lot. I can't say I've ever come across this type of behaviour at any border. Can you name any countries that do this?

I think United States has right to allow or deny foreign peoples for any reason. Social media contacts including. I would not be happy if I am US citizen and they using border to get around constitution and search me however.

If you are not a US citizen BP can deny access for ANY reason, it's our country. Now being a US citizen it should be different and your constitutional rights should be respected. Though the constitution is more about "human" rights and not just citizen rights - which I feel should change. But there are already plenty of "laws" or "acts" that violate the US constitution and bill of rights. So now-a-days it doesn't really mean anything unless you take it to court and the judge happens to be a constitutionalist and you win.

Honestly though I really don't think analyzing social media on the fly right after you land is going to be an effective practice.

NO ONE is illegal on stolen land.

Associate with terrorists and others who hate this country and get pulled aside for further questioning and examination.....that's exactly what's supposed to happen at our borders. Why does this seem like such a surprise to so many snowflakes? This is also what happens at every other border entry point at every other country on the planet.

Where did it say his friends were terrorists? Having anti-American sentiment doesn’t make you a terrorist, most of the world has always hated the holier than thou hypocrites that took it on themselves to be the world’s sheriff. In most other countries having contrary opinions is not a crime, but I guess democracy is just an illusion in America now. You are either with or against us.

Listen y'all, for better or worse we are all judged by the company we keep. Whether that is by virtue of a gang tattoo, motorcycle jacket colors, black fishnet stockings on a male, or if we belong to the right country club. We are also judged by where we hail from. For example, a person from Georgia might be categorized as , "a dumb rebel", by someone whose great grand parent fought for the union army.

As far as letting this clown who pals around with perhaps ISIS sympathizers attend one of our major universities, I think ICE made the right call.

After all, this individual could be coming to the US to learn how to build better bombs.

Franklty, "oh I hang out with those people, but I'm nothing like thgem", simply doesn't fly. Aren't there colleges and universities in the middle east? If so, let him go there! And f**k him if he can't take a joke. After all, he'll be running back to his US hating crew, pissing and moaning about this shunning, and they'll be right there saying, "see, those Americans are no damned good. We told you so"..

Nor can I fathom fathom the imaginary utopias you people seem to think you live in. Perhaps you're all suffering from, "acute liberal propaganda overdose".

It used to be that folks were judged by their own actions. Now we seem to be judged by the actions of our friends or perhaps just whatever your friends or associates (or just people on the same forum) say. Of course we don't even know what they said because there's no evidence given. You guys in the US keep talking about freedom but if it's only freedom for some folk in society then it's not really freedom.

When I walk back from the pub through my local park at night I'm fairly certain I'm not going to get murdered. When my kids go to college then I'm also fairly certain they won't get killed in some mass shooting. If we get ill then we just go to hospital without worrying about whether we can afford it. We can also say what we believe without having to worry that others will view us as being a bad American. That's not to say where I live is Utopia, it isn't but it's fairly free.

All of that is simply untrue. Whether it's nostalgia on your part for happier days, or simply a foggy memory, I don't know.

The difference between now and the year 1 BW (before web), is that people simply have many more opportunities to be as blatantly asinine and forthcoming about themselves as possible, now with worldwide exposure to their foibles and stupidity.

While this generation is not whimpering about its "privacy being violated", it's online announcing it's most private and trivial secrets. . "I just farted, can I get a like for that"?

Once upon a time there was a social protest chant which went, "the whole world is watching, the whole world is watching, et al". But this was when the news cameras were rolling, and people were trying to get a point across. Now .the "whole world is watching", simply as a matter of course.

Were you to apply for a job in law enforcement, who you kept company with would be heavily scrutinized, .and could very well make the difference between you getting the job, or getting the boot. I honestly don't see that there should be a difference in background checks for those we intend to afford an all access pass to our finest schools and top level technologies. The guy that's teaching advanced chemistry has almost certainly been subjected to the same background check, that this immigrant is bellyaching about failing.

Hey, I'm completely on board with the idea that the US is going to hell in a hand basket. But a huge part of that problem, is all the politically correct liberal bullsh!t being handed.out

Trump actually has some good ideas, it's too bad he's unwilling to play by the rules he intends to create for others. The fact that he's an egomaniac and a pathological liar isn't helping either.

At the core of America's problems, is the fact that individuals are no longer responsible for their own actions. After that, I could go on for pages about how social issues here have become distorted to the extreme convenience and benefit of ethnic, criminal, and sexual concerns.

Hell, a local priest was just arrested for dipping into his parish's coffers to the tune of a hundred grand, part of which went toward buying male companionship. Oh well, I suppose things are looking up, since they didn't nail him for diddling the choir boys.

So, our male police commissioner was forced to step down. Part of the reason is that he was named in a sexual and racial discrimination lawsuit, (although not as a defendant). Predictably, a woman now has the job. This is a fat cow, who obviously never met a doughnut she didn't like. My question is, if you're going to demand "equal pay for equal work", how in god's name would this pig ever be able to run down a fleeing suspect? Or would that bit of physical exertion get left to her manservant. (I'm sorry, I meant "partner").

I think that's the only bit I agree with and I suspect we're not going to change each others minds on the rest so probably not worth arguing over it. Anyway, back to my utopia ...

Are you going to start spouting this juvenile, US hating crap about the US being formed on stolen land. Ir's a cutesy-pie little bit of propaganda to latch onto when you like to advertise how progressive you pretend to be.

The simple fact of that which history in teaches all of us, is that man is the planet's apex predator. Other predatory animals establish territories which they call their own, and will kill to defend it, or kill another to acquire it.

Every empire in the history of the human race has in one way or another been built on "stolen land". One pack of extremely violent naked apes steal it from another of the same, and sometimes it gets stolen back, or stolen by, another.

Try reading a history book once in a while, instead of sitting in front of the mirror imagining you';re you'r on the cutting edge of "quantum physics". <notice there's no capital letters require to pass spellcheck on that phrase.

BTW, the other day you were bragging how you would defend your property to the death with your collection of formidable guns. So tell me, are you fantasizing yourself playing, "brave Heart", from stolen land, or land which was eventually "stolen back",

For the sake of most likely hearing myself talk, (as you're so prone to doing), consider this. The Western portion of the Roman Empire fell to the Goths and other tribes in 476 AD. The net result of which precipitated the "dark ages". The Eastern half of the same empire, fell to the Ottoman Turks, in 1453 AD:.

On May 29, 1453, after an Ottoman army stormed Constantinople, Mehmed triumphantly entered the Hagia Sophia, which would soon be converted to the city's leading mosque. The fall of Constantinople marked the end of a glorious era for the Byzantine Empire.

So, Constantinople is now Istanbul, and many of the Islamic fundamentalists are now preaching their hate from, "stolen land".

Every once in a while I like to refer to these Wiki articles about "propaganda".

They refresh my memory on how the state and others of different opinions and values, are trying to manipulate my thoughts and actions:

I suggest you do the same, as a fact check, to see how much bullsh!t you've absorbed..

Trust me, familiarity with these topics, can honestly build strength of character:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda_techniques

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_propaganda

A gentleman named John B Watson, is considered "the father of behavioral psychology". He gave up his studies, and went into advertising. (It pays way better). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_B._Watson

I guess you people all imagine that adages and platitudes that have been around for ages, simply have no influence or meaning to a bunch of techno-nerds, drooling at new "solutions", which are still searching for a problem, or even a need for their existence.

Well here's an old gem for you......:"Birds of a feather, flock together".

Try and wrap you tech addled little minds around the fact that the saying, has virtually nothing to do with ornithology.

Although we could it interpret as cautioning us about invasive or dangerous species....
