Having problems with installing sound drive on my Windows 98

I recently got an old PC from my friend and I formatted the drive and installed Windows 98 SE on it. It's got an onboard sound card and no matter how hard I try, I can't install the drive for it. I know I'm installing the right drive (Columbia III Onboard Sound Driver) but it just wouldn't show up on the device manager and the volume control doesn't even come up. Is there any way to fix this? My computer is Seanix TEAC400-BCB, BTW. Here are the specs:

Try going to CMOS (BIOS Setup) when the computer starts, and confirm Sound is enabled

Try going to Safe Mode Device Manager (View- show all files) and remove all sound drivers already installed

Restart, hopefully you are given a plug and play prompt

I have not confirmed the drivers, but I take it, that you have the correct drivers for that M/B and Win98

Well, here's the information, but whenever I click on Chipset in the System Tab, the program crashes and says "You have performed an illegal action." So this system information is incomplete because before the program finishes analyzing and reports the system specs it crashes. I'm thinking of installing Windows ME this weekend to see if that'll fix my audio problem.

If you understand what a inf file is and read the details, you would realise that the file is os independant. My originaly link is sufficient.

Bigfellla I posted because your original link had 4 Infs not 1 (and I personally, wanted to confirm which one - which took a while!)

well, i ran the file and when I restarted, it found bunch of hardwares and installed softwares but the audio still didn't work. I'll install Windows ME tomorrow and see what it does.

that was simply the chipset driver. NOw install the sound driver and restart. ME is the worst OS ever made btw.

Go to device manager and right click on the sound driver and choose uninstall. Uninstall anything to do with the sound driver in the Uninstall Programmes and then restart.

Go into the bios, and ensure that the sound is enabled in there.

Then start in Safe mode (Tap F8 on restart)

Install driver again.

Restart

then post a screenshot of the device manager and the sound properties box open.

I just installed Windows ME and it automatically installed sound drive and now everything works perfectly! :) Thanks for all your guys' helps.

See Bigfellla
ME is better with drivers anyway

Yes ME was the worst - well known.

But, on low spec systems, it installs easily and gives lots of extras (that I'm sure lhk890419 has noticed)

It just may require re-install in about 6 Months ! But other than that, perfect.

He is just a noob who cant install drivers that is all. ME is a security nightmare, so yes you are right, you get lots of EXTRAS. Plus, its no longer supported. The worst version of windows ever. All he had to do is properly install the driver.
