I bought a hitachi 500gb hdd today, I have vista on my old 80 gb hdd but want to put this 500gb into 3 partitions and run xp on it however....

Vista detects hdd as 500gb
XP detects hdda as 131gb

Is there something I need to do to get xp to recognise its fullsize?

That will fix it? could i use partition magic after install or does it need sp2 to recognize a big hdd?

You need service pack one to recognize more hard drive space, but that has been replaced with SP2. You would have to use partition magic after SP2 is installed to access the drive space.

Well I cannot even install xp now, it tries to reboot after copying files, does a long beep and restarts, and cycles...its set as master but to no avail it just wont boot up, and booting up off the disk just recopys the files and gives me the same problem...im guessing because the bios picks it up as 500gb but xp doesnt =/

Fixed it, thanks for advice drive is working like a dream now.
