Update Adobe Flash Player
Download the Latest Adobe Flash for Firefox and IE Without Any Extras: http://www.404techsupport.com/2010/...-flash-for-firefox-and-ie-without-any-extras/

====================================

Update Adobe Reader

You can download it from https://www.techspot.com/downloads/2083-adobe-reader-dc.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions (if present).
Note. If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Alternatively, you can uninstall Adobe Reader (33.5 MB), download and install Foxit PDF Reader(3.5MB) from HERE.
It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.
Note: When installing FoxitReader, make sure to UN-check any pre-checked toolbar, or any other garbage.

===================================

1. Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

2. Now, we need to remove old Java version and its remnants...

Download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it.
  • Run JavaRa.exe (Vista users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Do NOT post JavaRa log.

========================================

We have one corrupted registry key affecting Windows updates.

Following steps involve registry editing. Please create new restore point before proceeding!!!
How to:
XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948247
Vista and Seven - http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/wind...tore-point-for-windows-vistas-system-restore/

Download Vista.zip file from here: http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/files/download/9-registry-network-keys/
Unzip the file.
You'll find several files inside.
Double click on bits.reg file and confirm the prompt.
Restart computer.
Post new FSS log.

I tried to download Adobe Reader from your link but it wouldn't install; it said the application is "already installed on my computer."
Also, I don't know how to remove old versions of the reader from my computer if you think I should.
Also, for about 6 months now, whenever I try to read a PDF, everywhere where there is supposed to be an image on it, is just a grey box for me. I have searched everywhere trying to figure out what the problem is and how to fix it and couldn't get any help. People just say the person's PDF must be wrong, but I know that's not the case. There's definitely something wrong with my reader. Don't know what to do b/c it's annoying. Couldn't see any helpful advice on Adobe website either.
I think my computer had already updated the adobe flash before I got on here today. But I did what you said anyway.
On another note, also since around 6 mos. ago, almost every page I go on with my firefox has an irritating bar across the top saying "Firefox prevented this page from redirecting to another page" Allow? I don't know if there's something wrong w/ my firefox or if it's supposed to do that now. Do you think I need to delete my firefox program and redownload it?

So I did everything you instructed, including the java and javara. I also created the restore point.

Lastly, I downloaded the vista.zip file, but I don't think I did it right. I just double clicked it and it had a columns list of a bunch of files with their names; types; and compressed size. The third one on the list had 'name' bits, 'type' registration entries, 'compressed size' 2KB. I got a notice: "Adding these registry items could cause problems" or something like that and I clicked to do it anyway.
Then I restarted my system, but when it did not make an FSS log, or do anything at all, I realized that maybe I didn't do it right and have now added a bunch of registry changes that I wasn't supposed to to my system! I don't really know what "unzip" a file means so now that I look at it, does it mean I was supposed to click the top where it says "extract all files"? If that's what I was supposed to do, I didn't. Did I screw the whole thing up? What should I do now? Can we remove the registry additions if I wasn't supposed to add them? And then do the "extract all files after"??

Sorry about the screw up if I did. I will wait to hear from you to proceed.

You did fine :)

Your computer is clean

1. We need to reset system restore to prevent your computer from being accidentally reinfected by using some old restore point(s). We'll create fresh, clean restore point, using following OTL script:

Run OTL

  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following:

Code:
:OTL
:Commands
[purity]
[emptytemp]
[EMPTYFLASH]
[emptyjava]
[CLEARALLRESTOREPOINTS]
[Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Post resulting log.

2. Now, we'll remove all tools, we used during our cleaning process

Clean up with OTL:

  • Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTL main screen, press the CLEANUP button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

If you still have any tools or logs leftover on your computer you can go ahead and delete those off of your computer now.

3. Make sure, Windows Updates are current.

4. If any trojans, rootkits or bootkits were listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC) weekly.

8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): https://www.techspot.com/downloads/4898-secunia-personal-software-inspector-psi.html. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

10. (Windows XP only) Run defrag at your convenience.

11. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

12. Read How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html

13. Please, let me know, how your computer is doing.

My Windows updates are up to date.
My computer is running almost perfect now. I am actually amazed at the improvement. It's totally faster too! Thank you so much for helping me. I do appreciate it.
I just have a few questions if you don't mind:
1. In the right bottom corner of my screen ( taskbar) is the symbol for when I'm online. The icon normally has the two tiny computers with the little Earth planet in front of it. Ever since the virus was starting to cause bad troubles, the symbol looks like I'm not online with a red X through it. When I hover over it instead of saying connected it says: "Connection status: unknown. The dependency service or group failed to start." I am online but don't understand why the symbol doesn't show it. When I double click it, it opens the connect to a network window. At my connection it says: "connected with limited access." This thing never used to say this in the past and I know there's nothing wrong with my internet. Can you tell me how to fix it?
2. Should I be running both MBAM all the time AND Avast, or just one of them?
3. Almost every web-page I go on with my firefox browser says in a grey bar across the top "Firefox prevented this page from automatically redirecting to another page. Allow" Is this what Firefox is supposed to normally be doing? or do you think there's something wrong with my browser? Should I delete FF and redownload it, or get a new browser, or just leave it alone?
Looking forward to your advice. Kind regards and thank you so much again.
Leah

Thank you Broni for answering my questions and fixing my computer. I am going to try those suggestions. All the best to you.
