How do I connect Alexa to the Internet?

A friend gave me Alexa & Echo Dot, I managed to get Echo Dot online, but Alexa won't for unknown reasons, I even followed the directions here https://www.google.com/search?q=get...rome..69i57.9507j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

How to connect Amazon Echo to in-home WiFi

1. In the Alexa app, select Settings from the left navigation panel.
2. Select Set up a new device.
3. Press and hold the Action button on your Echo until the light ring turns orange. ...
4. The Alexa app will show you a list of available WiFi networks.

Why can't I use Alexa by herself? Every time I visited my friend, all one of us had to say was Alexa, play music or Led Zeppelin & she would. No echo dot involved. Now nothing
