i recived this laptop ( an old thinkpad 600) from my dad to work on. but when i try to format the hardrive with format c:, the command prompt says warning all data on disk will be lost... and i say yes. then it says cannot because the volume is used by another process... would you like to dismount and i say yes, then it says cannot lock the drive, volume is still in use. how do i fix this, i have the windows 2000 pro installed and the installation disk. please help me.

Go into bios and make sure the boot order is set to Floppy drive first then Cd Then hard drive.

Make sure there isn`t a floppy in the drive put in you Windows 2000 disk then save and exit.

When your computer starts to boot up it will say press any key to boot from Cd.

Press any key then follow the on screen instructions.

Once you have formated your HD the installation process will continue,
during which time your computer will reboot and again you will be asked to press any key to boot from CD. DO NOT PRESS ANY KEY(otherwise it will start again from scratch) and your installation will continue.
