How to install Hotmail on 8.1?

I have been shown how to make Hotmail the default mail,
but now it turns out it has to first be installed in order to do
that and I can't find anything that shows how - first with
simple step by step instructions for an 8.1 novice, and second
without a whole bunch of unnecessary or confusing instructions
that assume a quite a bit of 8.1 knowledge.

This whole thing with 8.1 is so very unnecessarily confusing
and complicated. No wonder so many people hate 8.1!!

This is to help a 74 year old friend who was unfortunate enuf to
have 8.1 on her very first computer she's ever used.

The significance is there's NOTHING to install at all Your browser access to gmail.com is all you need.

Pardon me but I have a hotmail.com account which is also known as outlook.com . Simply type hotmail.com in your browser & log in.

I'd see if you can upgrade her computer to Windows 10 which is free. That will be much easier to use than Windows 8.1. If you download the Microsoft media creation tool and let it handle the upgrade she will be running W10 after a few hours. The longer this is left the harder it will be for her to cope.
