How to know if I can upgrade my CPU

The CPU is not replaceable, as it is soldered into the motherboard. Well, technically, it's possible to replace it but the process involves desoldering 988 tiny connection balls and then reprogramming the BIOS to accept a new PGA988 processor.
There's not much faster than the i7-720QM that would fit anyway - the fastest one, the i7-940XM Extreme Edition is clocked to 2.13/3.33 GHz (yours is 1.6/2.8 GHz) which, at the time, was a notable difference but it wouldn't help much these days.
You're better off replacing the hard drive for an SSD and adding more memory (if possible).
