How to stop msmsgs.exe service ?

Hello Friends,

I am Nikhil. I am having Windows XP Home Edition, SP1 at my end. On startup it automatically starts the Windows Messenger Service msmsgs.exe

I had tried to disable it but everytime, it starts again at startup. Even I had removed it through "Add / Remove Programs", but in vein.

Can you please tell me whether this utility really needed for smooth operation of windows ? If not, how to remove it ?

If you don't use Windows Messenger, you can disable it as follows: Start -> Programs -> Windows Messenger -> Tools -> Options -> Preferences. Uncheck "Run this program when Windows Starts".

Note: The msmsgs.exe file is located in the C:\Program Files\Messenger folder. In other cases, msmsgs.exe is a virus, spyware, trojan or worm! Check this with Security Task Manager.

I had tried this too. Actually in the task-bar at right hand side it does not show icon but the service can been seen in windows task manager under processes head. And even after ending this process, it again re-starts after some time.

By the way, its not a virus, it is the Windows messenger Service only.

Can you give some concrete solution for it ?
